More about Occidental Grand Fuerteventura
My girlfriend and i stayed at the Occidental Grand for a week at the end of September and had a wonderful time.
Rooms are very spacious and most have excellent views. TV Channels are very german but they did have bbc world and eurosport.
Bathrooms were fab and were very clean.
Weather was fab, a little blowy at times but nice and hot all through the week.
Swimming pools were beautiful and were cleaned every day, altho they were very cold at first but once you plucked up the courage to get in it was fine.
Food was fantastic, good variety everyday. Try the other resteraunts, especially the grill, the fish was out of this world.
One bad point was getting drinks in the evening, they seemed a little under staffed.
Over all we had a great time and we will be returning some time in the future.
Treated like royalty
My husband and myself booked at the occidental grand in the royal club for two weeks at the beginning of September. After a coach transfer of about one and half-hours we arrived at 2.45pm at the main reception and were taken within 5 minutes by the bellboy on the golf cart to the royal club reception. We were greeted by the receptionist, with cold face towels to cool ourselves down, whilst the bellboy took are cases to are room the receptionist took us to the restaurant as lunch would be finishing at 3.30pm. After lunch we went back to reception and were given gold club cards, this is instead of having to wear wristbands, and then the receptionist took us to are room. The room was very nice, large and clean with twin beds, the sheets on the beds are crisp white cotton and changed every day, large television, dvd player, cd mini hi fi, two white fluffy bathrobes, air conditioning and ceiling fan, large wardrobes, mini bar which was filled every day with soft drinks bottled beer and water, a safe which was free, a round table and four chairs, and a balcony with table and two chairs which had a sea view. The bathroom was large with a hydro bath tub, bidet, toilet, two showers one over the bath and one walk in shower cubicle large enough for two, sink and hair drier. The towels were white and plentiful and changed twice daily. When the evening staff changed the towels they also turned back your sheets and the cover was shaped into a fan, they left the room with dim lights on and soft music playing on the TV. Also there were blue pool towels in the bedroom, which could be changed as often as you like at the reception. In the reception there was a computer with free access to the Internet.
The restaurants breakfast and lunch were in the private restaurant for the gold club resident only, but if you wanted a change you could use any of the main hotel restaurants also but we preferred to use the royal club as it was quieter and better quality food, don't get me wrong there was nothing wrong with the food in the main buffets just a lot larger and nosier. For the evening meals you went to the buffet or booked to go to the choice of five different restaurants. The Exclusive tindaya restaurant in the royal club was very worth while visiting but you could only use it once a week. The other restaurants in order of how we liked them was Las Reses meat restaurant which did a very good mixed grill, La Hacienda Mexican, D’Oriental Chinese and lastly which we did not like and would not recommend was Via Veneto Italian but they did do a good pizza but the service and atmosphere was not the same as the other restaurants. The only drinks served in the restaurants was, wine, water, beer and soft drinks, also if you are a gold club resident you showed your card and got better quality wine. The bars in the main part of the hotel served mainly just local brands spirits and the cocktails were weaker. The bar in the royal club served international brand spirits and a lot stronger, it was also open from 10am till 11pm, it does not mention cocktails on there drink menu but if you ask they do them for you, try a banna mama it is very good. Cannot say a lot about the night entertainment as we only went to one show, as we preferred to relax in the royal bar instead. There is a swimming pool and Jacuzzi in the royal club and about four swimming pools within the grounds of the main hotel, as far as I am aware they were all cold freshwater, but once in was very nice. As the occidental grand is situated on a hillside the steps that lead down to the beach are steep, there are two ways down, and the easier one is at the far side of the royal club. The beach is nice but it also has nude people on it, but this did not bother us, as many of them were in like little bunkers at the top of the sands. We are certainly thinking about returning to the occidental grand but would pay the extra again for the royal club. If you do decide to go to the occidental grand I hope you enjoy it as much as we did. If you would like any further information please feel free to e-mail me and I will try to answer your query.
We have just completed a weeks stay in the Occidental Grand (17-24 November 2004). We upgraded to the Royal Club, at the time of booking, and so enjoyed the additional benefits associated with club. Better still we were upgraded to a suite on arrival. We had a very large sitting room containing a three piece suite, large TV and a six seater dining table. The bedroom was huge with a seven foot bed and the bathroom was 24ft x 11ft.
Knowing the system for evening meals we booked to eat at the speciality restaurants on arrival. We eat at the Chinese restaurant twice, the Italian and the Grill once. We also dined at the Royal Club restaurant on one occassion. The other nights we used the buffet. On the whole, the food was very good but not exceptional.
The Royal Club has its own restaurant for breakfast and lunch with waiter service. We preferred to have lunch in the main buffet.
The grounds are well tendered and the staff friendly. The pools were not as cold as some have suggested. The sea temperature was only marginally cooler than the air temperature.
We mainly sunbathed in the naturist area which was quiet and relaxing but often packed. The CO beach was great for naturists and textiles alike. It is possible to walk for miles without clothing. The built up areas tend to be mainly textile.
We will be going back!

A week in heaven
What a Fantastic hotel!! I spent a week at the Occidental grand with my wife and two kids 11 and 1. After reading reviews I did not know what to expect from the hotel and was a bit apprehesive. On arrival we checked in which was quick easy and very friendly the kids were given a colouring book a t shirt and sticker which I thought was a nice touch. We did not arrive until 22:30 and the restarants were closed but they had kept some food for us and we were allowed to take it in the main buffet again very grateful as we had not eaten since the plane. We stayed in the standard rooms which we found very nice and roomy considering there were 4 of us. We tipped the maid on the first day as a result we got our minibar restocked daily for the whole week instead of every two days. And the room was kept immaculate.
All the staff were very friendly and we found a little Spanish got you a very long way especially around the bars.
The pool areas were clean tidy and very large with more than enough loungers. The views from some of the pool areas over looking the beach and from our balcony were just beautiful especially at sunset/ sunrise got some fantastic photos.
The entertainment during the day was good I went rifle shooting did archery won the pistol shoot and won a 30 min massage at the mandalay spa very gooood!!!! the night entertainment was not so good but no complaints as the kids loved it and as long as they were kept happy we had a good time.
The food was fantastic which is the biggest thing I could not understand from many of the bad reviews. There was such a massive choice just at the main buffet that we would have been happy eating there all week. As it went we ate at the Italian,Mexican and the Oriental all were very nice with the Italian being buffet the others waiter service.
We walked along the beach to Jandia for the market on Thursdays which was fantastic takes 1hour 30 mins or so. Yes we saw the nudsits but did not bother us or the kids.
All in all I cannot fault this hotel in anyway it was just a Fantastic week and everyone was so helpful and friendly you couldn't help but have a good time here. If you are looking for a friendly relaxing holiday where you can pamper yourself in beautiful surroundings even play some sports if you feel like being abit energetic. If you like your food and drink but your day job is not restaurant critic for the times as seems to be with alot of these reviewers. Then you will not want to leave this hotel at the end of the week. I will be back same time next year!!
We stayed here in January and seeing a couple of bad reviews here today I had to put the record straight! I appreciate that people can have bad experiences which might cloud their overall view, perhaps the operator you go with makes a difference. We went with First Choice.
The place is fantastic, beautifully landscapped gardens, several bars to chose from and it was lovely and quiet when we stayed in January.
I simply cannot understand why some people have criticised the food on here. God knows what you eat at home, but the quality, variety and quantity was excellent. A mix of traditional Canarian/Spanish dishes as well as dishes obviously aimed to satisfy British, German and French tastes. The choice was amazing. I never saw 'cool Brussel Sprouts' served at breakfast, but even if I had the fact there is such an enormous buffet to choose from means one could avoid the sprouts! Perhaps Germans like them?
As for the cats, there are perhaps four or five that we only ever saw walking about the extensive gardens, and they aren't the feral scraggy things you might have been led to believe, but well looked after animals clearly 'employed' by the hotel to keep rodents away. They are few, clean and unintrusive.
I read some reviews of this hotel from 2003 and they were great so we were very excited to go there! However, during our trip (October of 2004) we experienced some problems.
The hotel looks beautiful from outside and on the first sight it is an absolute dream. However, when we entered the room there was a strong smell of bug spray, especially in the bathroom. We opened the balcony door to get rid of the smell, however, at night it was impossible to sleep with the open window because the hotel is high on the hill and the wind was making a lot of noise. Also, the walls are very thin so one can hear all the noises outside. The first night I could not sleep at all. The next morning we complained to the reception about the strong smell, the floor was washed in our room but the smell was coming back especially in the bathroom. There was a card saying that there is a bug problem and asking not to leave any food because it attracts the bugs. Also I saw some baby cockroaches in the public bathrooms. I was sensative to this problem because of the baby girl we were with.
Also we had to buy the beach umbrella because there were no umbrellas available on the beach, also baby pool had no shade at all.
We could only eat at the Buffet restaurant since all the other were fully booked, so we did not managed to try them. The lunches were the best meals of the day. Lots of fresh fish, salads and lots of fresh foods.
The general feeling was that there was too little staff for too many people, staff looked stressed out.
Also we could not understand why the hotel will not fix the stairs that are going to the beach from the center point of the hotel, I guess they were destroyed by flood and they are only good half a way to the top. The other stairs are on the side of the royal club and can be very far away to walk with the little child.
To sum up, the hotel is absolutely beautiful, located in the great nature spot. But the problems we experienced would make it a 3 star hotel and not 4+ star.
This place delivered
My wife and I have never done an all-inclusive (or hardly anything booked through a travel agent) before, and were pleasantly surprised by what we found. We were after a quiet week of no-hassle winter sunshine, swimming, reading and a bit of tennis. And that’s what we got. We had a great time. We’re both 32 with a baby on the way (early days), so Ibiza Uncovered was not on the agenda.
As befits a hotel which caters mainly for Germans, everything ran like clockwork. The hotel was very tastefully laid out, spotlessly clean and our room was large with a nice bathroom and superb ocean view (worth paying the extra for). The staff were cheery and polite. We used the pool everyone on here reckons was too cold. Okay, it was a bit cooler than the sea, but fine once you’re in. Not sure what the fuss was about.
We deliberately chose a hotel in the south to avoid the bust-a-gut breakfast and lager lout element, so the usual English football shirts and tattoos were swapped for the stonewash denim and dodgy moustaches/hair-dos of our German friends. Add to this the fact that the majority were middle-aged or older, this meant a nice quiet stay. All this talk of people pushing in/being rude etc - well we saw none of that. Breakfast was packed at 8am, so people (ourselves included) clearly weren’t boozing until the early hours.
We got so into the spirit of things that my wife and I even went “native” and got our kit off on the beach. Having said that, we did hide in a windbreak which wasn’t at all overlooked, and stuck our stuff back on again to venture into the sea. So we didn’t quite get to the stage of playing nude boules and conducting big group debates with everything hanging out. Quite liberating, yes, but a lot of the people would definitely have looked a lot better with their smalls ON rather than off.
Only slight disappointment was evening food. Breakfast fine, lunch we took in the swimming pool area – also fine, but dinner would have been improved by having more fresh fish/Spanish food. Also, don’t forget the target audience – so there was plenty of ham, cheese, pickles, gherkins etc. And that was at breakfast. Wouldn’t recommend the Mexican, but the Italian was okay.
All in all a top week. And yes, we’d go back.
A Perfect Holiday
We have just spent the Christmas week at the Occidental and we have had a great time. The standard of food, drinks, accomodation and service is outstanding. Yes the pools are cold but what the hell, we were still sunbathing on Christmas day and eating lobster and fillet steak at night ! The only advice I would give anyone going there is if you like a cup of tea or coffee before leaving your room in the morning take a travel kettle as these are the only facilities not provided, however you can still get tea, coffee and milk satchets from the many buffets and restaurants, so dont bother taking any ! Also book the restuarants when you arrive as then you know you have got in at the time that you prefer. We will be going back !
Wonderful for the whole family!
We spent two weeks at Christmas at this marvellous hotel! In our opinion, it is not possible to get anything better, because then we have to call it pathetic! This is just great! Everyone was smiling, perfect service, excellent food and drinks. Lots of fun for the children, and nice activities for the adults! We would love to come back any time!!!
we stayed here for our honeymoon and found just about the most perfect relaxing holiday. the staff were amazing and efficient. the food and service was first class. if you are looking for the perfect break then i would strongly recommend this hotel. the beach is not great but the pool and hotel more than make up for this. but great beaches are close by and not too hard to get to. the food and local drinks are a match for all you will find here. the room service is top class. we were very well looked after the whole time and really enjoyed our time there so much that we are looking to book another holiday this year at the same hotel. book it. you will not regret it. i promise.
