We had a very enjoyable stay at the Dream Hotel Gran Castillo. Friendly helpful staff. The hotel itself is immaculately clean. We dined several times in the hotel's restaurant "San Sofé" several times as well. Wonderful food and excellent service.

Not what I would call 5 star

by TripAdvisor Member DublinTommy

We stayed at the Gran Castillo between Xmas and New Year.
The rooms were spacious and clean but this was certainly not a five star hotel. For 3 of our 7 nights we had no hot water and were told that it was hot enough. The days there was hot water it was scalding hot. The hotel management suggested that we were the only people in the hotel that complained about this.
The food in the pool side bar was foul and on more than one occasion we had to send it back. The staff just re-heated the food and re-served the existing dish. This was totally unacceptable for a five star hotel. We complained to the duty manager every other day and asked him to write down our complaints. When we contacted our local reps and our own travel agents the management had no record of our complaints. Our travel gave us a small refund in response to our complaints but this is certainly one of the worst hotels for service I have ever stayed in. The pictures look good but the service does not back them up.

Stayed at The Gran Castillo (Dream Place) with my husband and son age 6. Wonderful place to relax and pamper yourself. Lots of spa facilities to indulge yourself in. Went for the Half board option. Food was ok and drinks prices were not bad considering it is 5 star. You must take a stroll along the pormenade to Marina Rubicon where you will find lovely shops and gorgeous places to eat. If heading into playa blanca its about a 20 minute stroll along the well lit and safe promenade. The hotel its self did not have much in the way of entertainment for my son. They did however have a kids disco for an hour in the evening. We did not stay at the hotel most evenings but if you do its really only the piano bar within the hotel. (which is nice but a bit too quiet for us) The room was out of this workd, we booked a double room, but were given a suite which was amazing, Our flight arrived late so when we arrived we were greeted at reception with a glass of champagne and we were taken to our room. About 10 minutes after we were in our room lovely platters of food arrived complements of the hotel. Staff very helpfull too. Will be booking this hotel again.

ok, food not great

by TripAdvisor Member poot

stayed for 2 nights.

the room was very nice. Also extremely large with an impressive balcony and nice view of fuerteventura.

ordered room service which was a disgrace. cold pizza covered with cling film which tasted of salt. Despite complaining no refund was given as the manager was not available. I have read lots of bad reviews about the food and this was 100% confirmed.

The hotel is about 25 mins walk from playa blanca. The opposite direction 10 minutes away is one of the nicest beaches i have been to on the island.

The ground and pool area seemed quite small. Would have preferred more space. Also it appeared there was no daily cleaning of this area.

Overall this was a reasonable experience for the price. No way is this a 5 star.

4 star NOT 5 star

The hotel staff are very friendly and helpful but other than reception they speak very little English. The hotel complex, rooms and pool area are clean and tidy and warrent 5* but pools are not heated and are cold even in summer.
The Big disapointment was the quality of the food.
Breakfasts were ok but we had asked in advance for gluten free bread which we recieved only on the1st morning ,we gave in asking by day 7.
Lunch by the pool was terrible we ordered Chicken the 1st day for the children which was very bloody inside hence we never ate there again unless it was for a plate of chips which were normally cold.
Evening Meals were ok.We were Bed and Breakfast so only ate here 2 nights as the choice and Quality was not up to 5*.You are definately better off going into the town where theres lots of choice and good quality restaurants.(casa roja at the marina is expensive but great quality and worth it ! }
The hotel is a 20min walk to a marina or 40min to the town centre. Its a beautiful costal walk along a well lit path or 5min taxi ride .Take a cardigan as it can get chilly at night.
The beach by hotel is good for rock pools or paddling. The main beach is Playa Dorada its crowded but is one of the best beaches weve been on.Sunbeds were 2.5euros and plentiful.
If you have stopped in a PROPER 5* hotel in the past you may think this is more of a 4*.
In its defence it was cheaper than previous 5* holidays were had and we did have a very pleasant stay.
Overall 4* pretending to be 5*.

Best Hotel I ever sstayed

by TripAdvisor Member urlaub69

We stayed at the hotel with our little daughter.
The staff at the reception was incredible helpful.
The food was always fresh and hot, a good amount of variety dishes each day.

Pool area always clean and water temperature excellent.

Staff and director was incredible friendly and made a point to say hello every time they saw us.

The room was big enough, bright, the towles and sheet always clean.

I would recomment this hotel for families or people w/o children

Hotel with 5* aspirations!

by TripAdvisor Member bluedawn

The best thing about this hotel is definitely the accomodation. The rooms are superb. Ours was very spacious with a sitting area which could be seperated by sliding doors. The bathroom was lovely with a large bath and seperate walk in shower cubicle and a seperate toilet and bidet room.
We had a large, sunny balcony and everything was spotless clean.
The lobby area and reception is lovely with a central fountain and lots easy chairs and sofas to sit upon. This proceeds out onto an area overlooking the pools with more seating and and tables.
They do seem a little bit disorganised at times and we definitely threw them into confusion when we arrived an hour and half too early to gain access to our room. We had hoped that on the offchance the room would have been ready, but after much disjointed broken English conversation they realised that we were in fact checking in and not out they then proceeded to tell us to sit down in the lobby with the promise of juice or water.
After half an hour and no one attending to us at all we then decided to tell them that we would come back when they were ready for us.
In fact we would have done this initially if they had asked us to but to just sit us down and then proceed to forget about us felt quite rude and made us feel very awkward!
The restaurant is another area that seems to be a bit hit and miss. Sometimes the food was hot but most of the time it was luke warm. The bread was never located near to the soup and the butter was always across the other side of the restaurant from the bread. So you had to walk all around balancing bread and soup.
We were allocated a meal time sitting and then given a table and told this was our table for the duration of the stay.
This seemed to be a bit unfair as there were some lovely "romantic" tables in the outside dining areas but we were not given the chance to sit at one of these.
On the positive side there was a very good choice of food available and with red and black caviar and cava sparkling wine on offer at breakfast time so I suppose we should not complain too much!
The staff are lovely and so friendly and would not like to criticise them at all.
We only attended one evening of entertainment and this was just not the best. There seemed to be no sign of a "disco"(unless we missed it) and the show room bar was always closed when we came back to the hotel at about midnight - so hardly exciting - but it did ensure that there was no noise and everywhere was so quiet and peaceful at night.
We had booked this holiday independantly so did not have the "luxury" of a rep to explain things to us. As a consequence of this more information given to us at check in would have been very much appreciated - their English was not very good and our Spanish almost non-existent! So typical of the British that we expect everyone to speak to us in English but perhaps an information book written in English would have helped!
A map of the hotel would also have been useful as it was like a maze! We also believe that you could take your breakfast in your room but there was no information given to us about this facility and we only realised this towards the end of our stay when I noticed it written on the bottom of the room service menu - but no details on how to order it or if there were any extra charges.
It would appear that if you wanted robes and slippers you had to request them and they were a bit on the mean side with their toiletries and never replaced used items every day.
So in colnclusion this hotel would make a very good 4* with 5* aspirations!!
The walk from the hotel to Playa Blanca is lovely but can take 30 minutes. There are no bars or restaurants in the shopping comlpex behind the hotel - in fact there isn't even a handy supermarket. Walking through the shopping complex is a bit like walking through a ghost town!
But we thoroughly enjoyed our holiday in Playa Blanca and will be returning. A trip up Timanfaya is a must and try to see
El Golfo - very unusual and the fishing village with its fish restaurants lining the ocean frontage is great if you like fish - but don't expect to be given a menu with burghers and pizza - they only serve what ever they have caught that day!

Horrendous Hotel

by TripAdvisor Member Dublincoleen

Really would not recommend this Hotel at all. Our experience was a complete nightmare from start to finish. It certainly wasn't cheap and I would say it is only a 3 star at a push. When we arrived at the Hotel we had no Hot water and this continued for the first 4 days. We were moved to another room in the Hotel but the water was cold there as well. We only stayed in the Hotel for a week and this was just after Christmas. The food was cold and when you sent the food back they would just re-heat what you had!! Five star hotels do not do that and it can be very dangerous especially when you are eating pasta. The staff were rude and not very helpful. After many complaints we just didn't get anywhere with the staff and we were cerartinly not the only customers complaining!!! I would really recommend you take a second look before considering staying at this Hotel.

Enjoyable Experience

by TripAdvisor Member wildhareuk

We came here at half term with out 15 year old daughter and her friend. They had a room in the "castle" and we were a couple of doors away on the same floor. We had excellent sea views and our balcony captured the evening sun.

We had booked a car on the internet before we arrived (Auto Reisen) and although we had to wait in queue when we arrived at the airport, the difference in price at the other car hire places (no queues here) was significant enough to warrant the wait. We had no problem with the car for the 7 days we were there.

We did get champagne and juice on our arrival and the reception staff were very good. In fact, we had no problems with any of the staff during our stay.

We were only staying bed and breakfast, so we can't comment on the food at other times. We found the food to be excellent at breakfast with a wide range of foods available, including black and red caviar and smoked salmon (and champaigne!)!
There was a wide variety of different bread and bread rolls available. There was the usual egg station for omelettes etc.

Our daughter and her friend spent a lot of time in the pool and especially liked swimming under the dining room! The water was a bit cold, but the weather was quite warm. Sunbeds could always be found around the pools. We only had one day that was very cloudy and it rained a bit on that day..

The evening entertainment wasn't the best we have experienced. We had amongst others a magician, some Russian dancers and a few singers. Drinks at the bar were not too expensive.

The walk to the Rubicon Marina was very pleasant along the clifftop path. It took about 10-15 minutes. It was about the same distance to Playa Blanca. Walking in the other direction would bring you to the Papagayo beach area although it would probably take about 45 minutes to the nearest beach. It's a lot easier to drive?

There is supposed to be a large commercial centre next to the hotel, but there were hardly any shops/restaurants open. One restaurant (expensive) and a bar.

We tended to get a taxi to Playa Blanca (about 4 euros) in the evenings which reception ordered for us.

All in all, although the hotel was quite a way out of the way it was very pleasant and I'm not sure that some of the negative reports on this hotel are warranted, certainly not from our experience.

Not 5 * at all!

by TripAdvisor Member phoebebevan

Not 5* at all! The rooms are lovely but no robes, no slippers, no coffee machine, no ironing board, no mini bar price list, no tissues , no flannels limited towels etc....
The food is awful...really bad, cold and boring, boring, boring. Think dreadful school dinners and they are 10 times worse. Everything is luke warm, the vegetables are overcooked mush and they encounter so many dangerous practices withregard to food hygiene.. Re heating rice and pasta soooo dangerous but they do it every night.
Drinks are overpriced and poor quality.
The gala New Year meal was good but entertainment poor. I think there was 4 fireworks!!

Do not go unless very cheap offer. Otherewise book just B & B and eat along the lovely restaurants at the harbour.
