Interesting Buildings
by AnneAlex
Many of the interesting buildings are on the beaten path, but one day I found myself taking the bus much further than I had intended and found this interesting building. I quickly snapped a picture through the bus window in hopes that I would find the building again- but never did. (The bus window was quite dusty as you can see.)
Hmmm... like the udders of a cow- which I thought to be interesting since the Canarian's don't eat or drink many cow products.
Santa Cruz seems to be somewhat of an Architect's playground. There are many interesting buildings to be discovered in this little city.
Castillo de San Juan

This is the sole remainder of Santa Cruz's forts and dates from 1679. Built from the black basalt rock that forms the basis of so much of Tenerife's historic buildings, it is also known as Castilla Negra (the black castle). It was once the centre of Santa Cruz's slave trade, where Africans were traded on route to the Caribbean. It didn't look like you can visit the castle, but it makes a picturesque and sturdy counterpoint to the gleaming white edifice of the Auditorio next door.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a friendly and bright city, with many pedestrian streets and a smooth climate.
The place I most liked was the Parque García Sanabria. This park is in the north part of the city. As the hotel was quite near the park, we used to cross it wherever we went. There is a great collection of species common in Santa Cruz, such as the flamboyant, a tree with red flowers.
From the park, the Rambla General Franco drives to the Fuerte de Almeida, the seat of the Military Museum, a good place to learn about the history of the city. Then we arrive to the port.
Following the seafront till the opposite end, we will find the Auditorium , the Parque Marítimo César Manrique and San Juan Bautista Castle.
What to do in Santa Cruz

"Top 5 activities"
1. Visit the Marina. It is beautiful and not just for people who like boats. I have picked up many nice guys there ; )
2. Take a 20 min trip to Orotava, a cute village next to Puerto de la Cruz, for amazing views of Mount teide and the bay.
3. Visit Calle Castillo for all your shopping needs and finnish the day with a Cerveza in Plaza Espana.
4. Just walk around Santa Cruz and get lost, there is so much to see you wont mind.
5. If you have to go to a beach, don´t go to Las Teresities. Yes its got nice yellow sand. But its also got lots of tourists, nasty beach attendents and horrible resturants. For a better beach, go up the coast alittle. Your sure to find one.
