Monument to the Marquis of Comillas.
Antonio López López, the first Marquis of Comillas was one of the most important men in XIX century Spain.
His origins were not aristocratic at all. On the contrary, he was born in a very humble family. so humble indeed, that he had to look for a better life in Cuba. He was a self-made man and returned to Spain with a considerable fortune. He invested it in a shippong company based in Barcelona, where he became one of the most prominent members of the Catalan bourgeoisie.
The King Alfonso XII awarded him the title of Marquis of Comillas for the services given to the kingdom during Cuba´s independence war.
