Potes Accommodation

by kentishgirl

Hi everyone!

Please help!!! Lol

I am having real trouble trying to find budget or any accommodation in Potes, we are looking to stay the nights of 23/24/25 December, two people, we will happily stay in a hostel or budget hotel with shared facilities - which is our holiday norm.

I really would love somwhere that I can email to book, and have a look t online.
It seems that I really cant find anything and its not the availability aspect....its the lack of accomm apect.

Basically we want to explore the Picos De Europa Park, so if you can reccommend anywhere else nearby that will be appreciated!

We will be travelling by train from Madrid and back to Madrid, so I need somewhere that is accessible by public transportation. I read that there are buses from Santander to Potes and that this town is on the edge of the Picos - hence the choice!

Many Many thanks in advance

Was it you I talked to about this area with before? Sorry, my brain is crap.

I don't know any source for online booking for accom there, but could only suggest googling Potes tourist info, they organise accom there and are very helpful- if you can catch someone speaking English- they didn't all when I've been. It is the main town in the Picos region and surrounded by beauty. The main route in from the coast goes up a lovely gorge beside a small river. If you can afford it, renting a car is worthwhile to enable you to take you own time and stop en-route to appreciate it.

If you do get a chance, Arena de Cambrales (?) is very nice too and is home to some fantastic cheese.

(At risk of getting in trouble here for blowing my own trumpet, there are some pics of the region and roads on my Spain page). Jem

this site have some info about Picos de Europa and Potes, the only Hostel i found inside Potes (there are some outside town) is:

Hotel Dolnar
Calle del Obispo, 8
39570 Potes - Cantabria - España
Telf/Fax: 942 73 10 54

no email there. Fontes Dé is a great place to stay too but far from everywhere and i don't know about buses there are info on the site
You ca also go to Map and see more great places to go.
I've been there once and i just loved Picos de Europa.
Don't miss the cable car in Fontes Dé it is amazing.
( I was there in summer and i camp in Fontes Dé - up up up)

consider renting a car (you can do that in Santander or in Picos too)... there are great routes to go and you just can do it all by car. Or a Taxi, but i think will be more expensive.

Hello Ali,

well dont worry: there are quite many places to stay around Picos.
The address that mcb has given is good for info about the area, but you will find more addresses in these links

http://english.turismodecantabria.com/cantabria/buscador.asp

thats the accommodation search of the Cantabrian tourist office.
I have had a look myself and did not find hotels emails, but you do have the complete address, info about the accommodation, maps and photos.

I would say, dont be afraid to book on the phone or by fax (if you prefer written confirmation): tourism is Cantabria main bussiness, so you can trust the people, they are honest and treat their guests well.

You could also book online through the Spain tourist office:
http://www.spain.info/TourSpain/Home?Language=en

You have 2 interesting links here:
1. accommodation: you can search the list of existing accommodations: addresses (2 of them with email), facilities, and also aprox. prices
2. online booking (you mail the tourist office and they book for you).

You will be coming exactly at Christmas, so book ahead: on those days, buses usually make less services or they are fully booked, and you might also have delays if there is snow.

Thankyou so much to all of you.
I have thoroughly searched and even called! and I still cant find any available "budget" accomms for this area.
Im mad because I really want to visit the Picos now! Ugghhh!!!
I think that its time I started looking elsewhere...Im thinking mountains for xmas....looking at the Sierra Guadarrama near Madrid, but as Ive now an urge to see the north maybe it'll be cities...Santander and Bilbao instead!

Thanks for all the helpful links though!

Santander is a very nice city... really beautifull. have luck

Re: Re: Potes Accommodation

by mrjemm

I vote for Bilbao! For some reason, just don't enjoy Santander. Just can't enjoy it, not sure why.

But Bilbao's my favourite city in Europe maybe.

Re: Re: Potes Accommodation

never been to Bilbao, that's the reason i've to choose Santander

Re: Santander or Bilbao or...

by milugares

Well, I enojy and love both Santander and Bilbao, so its difficult to decide:
if you like Arquitecture, then head for Bilbao without a doubt: Euskalduna, Guggenheim, Arriaga theater, the boulevards, the houses in the city center...
If you prefer outdoors and Nature, then Santander has beautiful landscapes and the sea: the bay, the Magdalena park, el Sardinero...

In spain Xmas presents are given both on Xmas Eve and on the 6th of January, so wherever you go, you will find lively cities, with lots of people doing shopping.

Choose a place and enjoy it without hurry. From London you have Ryanair flying to Santander and Easyjet (and the traditional ones) to Bilbao, so you could easily come back any other weekend and see the rest of it.

Travel Tips for Potes

Distilling the Orujo.

by breughel

Orujo is an "aguardiente" typical of Galicia. It is made by distillation of the residue, skins and seed, left after pressing grapes. In France the resulting alcohol is called "marc" in Italy "grappa".
What is special with the Orujo of Potes is the distillation in an "alquitara" instead of the classical "alambique" or still.
The Orujo has generally an alcohol content of 40% but higher concentrations of 50% are also commercialized.
Very often Orujo is produced in a variety of flavours from honey to cherry and coffee by a number of companies in and around Potes.

In November a "Fiesta del Orujo" is organized in Potes, on the town square, where specialists compete to distil the best brew using the "alquitara" and traditional methods. This is an exception to the law, as ambulant distillation is prohibited in Spain (risk of contamination by methyl alcohol).

Potes - Take a hike.

by pfsmalo

Once on top of the teleferico at Fuente De there is a myriad of trails to take, even all the way back down to the bottom (13.5 kms) if you want. We just took one of the shorter there and back hikes to the Hotel/Refuge Avila. This 7 kms round trip takes in some fine scenery, passes a royal residence and takes roughly 3 hours including a stop for beer and a sandwich.

The hotel/refuge tel. no is 942 730 999

PICOS DE EUROPA- National Park

by Hosell

The Picos de Europa in Northern Spain are a range of rugged limestone peaks that are home to a significant number of the world's best hiking trails, deepest caves and the odd bear. The mountains lie at the meeting point of the provinces of Asturias, Cantabria and Leon and reach heights of over 2500m. Divided into three massifs by two deep gorges they are the Occidental, the Central and the Oriental. The mountain range is overflowing with a wealth of activities and breathtaking views. Climb, cave, raft, hike or horse ride your way around the Picos de Europa and discover the most incredible National Park is Spain if not all of Europe. It is easy to find a lot of trails along all these mountains to make easy or long hiking activities, the views are just amazing!.
In wintertime you'll find some good ski resorts around for practice of Skiing or other winter sports.

FUENTE DE

by Hosell

Another place not to be missed if you are visiting Potes' area,it is.. .Fuente De, which has a Parador and a cable car that goes right up to the top of the central massif of the Picos de Europa, the view from top are awesome,if you are lucky and go on a clear day.Normally here only in summertime you will find many clear days but not in rest of the year, that are very foggy and also with lots of rain!.

The Parador is a very nice place to stay one night, all Paradores in Spain are a kind of luxury accommodations in special buildings like Monasteries,Palaces or in new builidings like that.

MOUNTAINS

by Hosell

When you visit this beautiful area of Spain, don't hesitate to make a stop, at Picos de Europa National Park.It is the perfect place for a nice vacation and relax,if you like the nature. Also is the best place to see wildlife or birdwacthing.
The city has a few hotels, but I suggest you to stay during your visit to the area in Casas Rurales,it is a kind of accommodation in Spain it small houses located in mountains and small villages. They are cheaper than a hotel, and you'll feel like at home.Another intersting option,it is stay in a campground, you'll find a lot of them in the area.
