As soon as there is a hint of nice weather, the city's promenades are filled with walkers and joggers of all ages and conditions. One of the best facts about Santander is that there are no high buildings on the waterfront, which is lined mostly with gardens and parks. This makes a perfect place for walking or jogging.

San Vicente de la Barquera:
is the marine village par excellence as it is obvious in all its traditions, customs and even in its popular festivities : La Folía (multitudinarious marine procession to the Virgin, celebrated on the second Sunday after Easter), and the procession to El Carmen (the 16th July).
San Vicente forms one of the most beautiful images of all the Cantabrian Cornice. Located between Asturias and Cantabria, its geographic location has undoubtedly facilitated its development as one of the favourite tourist destinies in the region.
The marine calling of San Vicente de la Barquera can be appreciated in its gastronomy, which revolves around fish and shellfish, the best being the sorropotún or marmita barquereña, a stew prepared with tuna and potatoes.
The Church of Santa María de los Ángeles, constructed between the XIII and XVI centuries is its most outstanding monument.
The old part of San Vicente is a monumental group filled with interesting buildings which have gained it the privilege of being considered Property of Cultural Interest of Cantabria since 1987. The bridges are another of the identification symbols of this village : the Bridge of La Maza with 28 arches, was built by order of the Catholic Monarchs in the XVI century, while the Bridge of El Parral dates back to the XVIII century.
Parque de la Naturaleza de Cabárceno

In the days of the Romans, this was an iron mine. Instead of writing the area off as a loss they Spanish governement turned this area into a specatacular zoo. The mined rocks yield very naturally looking enclosures for the various animals. The views from the zoo to the coast and Santander are breathtaking, as is the magnificent colors of the orange/brown rocks which were once ripe with Iron deposits.
This park is quite large and its a driving zoo. There are various parking lots to park, get out and see the exhibits. The way is well marked with arrows and numbers to the enclosures.
