Hello,
Myself and 3 friends would like to visit Santander for a week in July. Can anyone recommend good areas to stay? How would I go about finding apartments (or similar self-catering accommodation) that we could rent for the week? We aren't hiring a car and so it needs to be accessible by public transport.

Try a website called loquo which has a Santander page or try segundo mano which is a Santander paper similar to Loot in London. You will Love SAntander. Good luck with search, Aingeal
Rumbo al norte are a local travel agency with plenty of hotels and accomodation ideas. They did our bookings in 2003 and 2006 and were very helpful. Have a look at Santillana del Mar as a very pretty village to stop in. The name sugeests it is on the coast but it's actually inland. Well worth a visit or a stay. A train runs about 3kms from the village from Santander. The local rail network FEVE will give access to Bilbao. It's about 3 hours. The local bus service is ALSA so have a look at hese two websites for ideas of getting around the area. neither are very regular so checking the timetables before you go will help a lot.
Dunes of Liencres Natural Park:It´s situated 10 Kms far from Santander. It consists of the biggest extension of movable dunes of the whole Cantabrico. Dunes are between a vast pinewood and the Pas estuary. It´s a priviliged place for birdwatching.
Santander tiene muchas playas que puedes visitar muy cómodamente; el agua quizás sea un poco fría pero se puede aguantar

Santander has many beaches that you may visit easily; the water perhaps may be a bit cold but you can survive

El Puntal En algunas traje de baño, en otras tal vez nada
In some of them a swiming costume in others perhaps nothing
Un paseo en una "pedreñera" te abre varias buenas alternativas para pasar el día :
- Ir a la playa del Puntal que es una de las mejores y más tranquila cerca de Santander
- Dar un paseo en la lancha por la bahía , llegando hasta el faro
- Simplemente ir a conocer Somo y Pedreña ,dar un paseo y comerte unas buenas sardinas y bonito
One trip in a "pedreñera" opens several good alternatives to spend the day :
- To go to the Puntal beach that is one of the best and more quite beach near Santander
- To make a trip on the bay reaching the light house
- Simply to go to visit Somo and Pedreña , make a stroll and eat good sardines and tuna fish
Santander is not the best place if you like going to museums. The most interesting is the "Museo Oceanografico" which includes an aquarium.
The "Museo de Prehistoria" (prehistory) is pathetic and is better to go to the prehistory Museum next to the famous Altamira Caves in Santillana del Mar.

It is really nice to see fifteen or twenty bears in a wide area where it seems that they live in freedom
