Travel Tips for Santillana
CARS
by RudoElCojonudo
Santillana del Mar is a beautifull medieval village, and to preserb that is not allowed to go inside the village by car. Only locals are allowed to drive in, so if you arrive to the place by car you´ll have to park in one of the park areas provided in the outskirts. I did´t pay for park, but I don´t know if it´s like that all the year.
Don´t worry about that, in Santillana everithing is five minutes walking from everywhere!!
Cave Drawing of Altamira
by freya_heaven
The cave drawings of bison, deer & other animals are believed to date back to 12,000 BC.
Because of moisture caused by breathing the original paintings are closed off to the public. What you can see is a replica of the caves. It is still worth a visit even though you are not seeing the real mcoy.
Viewings of the real paintings & caves are limited to 30 people a day, to get a viewing you need to book your place at least 3 years before your planned visit!
Architecture
by andal13
Most constructions date from 15th century, and were untouched until now. Some of them belonged to important families, and their shields are carved on the front of their houses.
La mayoría de las construcciones datan del siglo XV, y permanecen intactas hasta el día de hoy. Algunas de ellas pertenecieron a importantes familias, y sus escudos están esculpidos en las fachadas de sus casas.
Beautiful Santillana del Mar
by ronaldinha
Santillana del Mar is BEAUTIFUL. It actually isn't really "del mar" as it isn't a beach town. You won't miss the beach though because you will be too caught up pretending you are starring in a medieval movie.
Just like in a lot of small towns in Cantabria, the wine and cheese shops are to die for. I get tears in my eyes thinking about the honey and cheese smell that hits you when you walk by these shops. Yum.
We spent one afternoon here. The town is very small and if you are in a rush, you don't need more than a day. However, if you are looking for a relaxing (and romantic) weekend, this is a beautiful place to be.
This was actually the only place on a three week road trip in the north of Spain that we camped. I should say "camped" because the site was very nice. They have very nice facilities including a laundry room, showers, a swimming pool, grocery store, and a bar/restaurant.
Questions and Answers

A: "It is completely impossible to do it by public transport. With public transport (Getting a bus from Bilbao to Torrelavega at 6:30 pm, you´d arrive there at about 8:25 pm..."
