Santa Juliana collegiate church.

by breughel

The renown of Santillana finds its origin in the “Santa Juliana” collegiate church built over an old hermitage which guarded the remains of Holy Juliana, martyr in times of Diocletian.
From the name of the Saint derived the name of the town.
The actual church was built in the 12th century in a Romanesque style.
The cloister was constructed in the following century and became very important. The Benedictine monastery rule was changed to the canon rule of St Augustine.

The sculptures on the church evoke the usual topics of the medieval religiousness, the fight between Good and Evil and the need of doing penance. In the main façade there is a triangular pediment with the martyr’s image. The relics of Santa Juliana are kept in the altarpiece which is an excellent Hispano-Flemish fifteenth-century work of art.
The monastery of Santa Juliana was one of the stages on the pilgrims northern road (coastal route) starting from San Sebastian to Santiago de Compostela.

Countryside

by andal13

Do not miss the countryside: green hills surround the village, and it a pleasure to get lost over there... Take a deep breath and fill your lungs with that pure air!

No te pierdas el campo: verdes colinas rodean a la villa, y es un placer perderse por all?... Respira profundamente y llena tus pulmones con ese aire puro!

Santillana del Mar

by DanielF

Santillana del Mar, a lovely Medieval village 30 km away from Santander, is considered to be one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. It is really worth a visit but it attracts thousands of tourists and it's full of souvenir and tourist shops... Try to come in the low season, in a day week, and you will enjoy its visit much more. By the way, Santillana del Mar has one of the most charming paradores in Spain. So why don't you offer your partner a romantic stay there?

Outside the village you can visit the new museum that hosts the replica of the Altamira caves and its prehistorical paintings, considered to be among the most important in the world. The new museum is beautiful and well integrated in the environment and the replica is really well done. If you want to visit the real cave, you should know there is a waiting list of years...
