by MAUIRADISE
WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO GET TO CUENCA FROM MADRID IN MARCH, 2010? THANK YOU FOR ANY INFO.

Hello
I have only driven to Cuenca but I would think that you have either the train from ATOCHA railway station in madrid or the Bus from the SOUTH BUS STATION ( http://www.estacionautobusesmadrid.com )
For the times (nearer the day of travel) or to get an idea of length of journey, look up :
www.renfe.es
for train
and
http://www.avanzabus.com
for bus.

And do note that Renfe schedules will change, so if you don't see what you need now, it may be there closer to the date you're traveling. I have not been *to* Cuenca ... I was further down to Teruel ... but I have researched this trip before and once had to write Renfe - and they stated the schedules do change and I should keep checking. If the train you want is for sale now and allows you to purchase it for March, then it will be OK.
Travel Tips for Cuenca
Climate
by Aitana
Cuenca is 956m above sea level, up to 1000m in the old town.
The climate is continental typical of the Spanish plateau, with cold winters and hot summers. Spring and Autumn are pleasant, with smooth temperatures during the day but nights are cold due to the altitude.
The cliffs
by DanielF
Cuenca is a city of canyons: a narrow stripe of rock flanked by two deep canyons carved by rhe rivers Júcar and Huécar. You cannot walk for a long distance in Cuenca without stumple over a mirador and each one of them offers a more beautiful sight than the former.
Ventano del Diablo
by barbskie
As we drove from the Enchanted City towards the city, we passed by the municipality of Villalba de la Sierra stopping at this area: The Devil's Window. Here's a fantastic location to view far wide. Don't miss to include this itenirary once you are in Cuenca.
The ramparts of Alarcon
by breughel
The hill where the village is situated seems to have been inhabited since prehistoric times. It was conquered by the Romans, converted into a fortress by the Arabs and conquered back by Alfonso VIII. The enclosing ramparts are one of the best known and most complete defence systems existing in Spain today. The castle was built by Alfonso VIII on the site of an earlier Arab castle.
Bridge of San Pablo
by barbskie
This bridge connects the old city to the Parador de Cuenca (former a monastery). Originally, built between 1533 and 1589, which was made of stone. As one of ist arches crumbled down, it was rebuilt in 1902 made of iron and wood as we see it currently. From here, you’ll have a great view over the Huecar gorge, the parador and the surrounding area.
