Travel Tips for Cuenca

Patrimony of Humanity.

by breughel

Cuenca is a city of average importance with about 50.000 inhabitants, capital of the province of the same name. If the modern part presents not much interest for the tourist, the ancient part hanging on a rocky platform enclosed in the South and in the East by the curve of the river Huecar and in the West by the river Jucar deserves amply its classification among the patrimony of humanity.
Lack of space explains the height of houses and the narrowness of streets in the Ciudad Antigua. Cuenca goes back to the Roman Empire. The place developed under the Moslems who built a fortress which took the name of Conca. The town was conquered in 1177 by Alfonso VIII. In the centuries which followed she knew an important economic development notably in the textile industry. This one declined in the 17th century leading to a decline of the town.

Cuenca is the entrance to the mountainous region of the "Serrania de Cuenca".
The new town is at the level of 900 m and the ancient city at approximately 1.000 m. The altitude has an influence on the climate: maximum 15°C at night in full summer, max. 30 °C in the daytime. Thus pleasant temperatures compared to Madrid.

Religious Music Week

by Aitana

The Religious Music Week has been declared a Festivity of International Interest for Tourists. It is celebrated since 1962. Internationally renowned orchestras, choirs and performers participate. The festival coincides with the celebration of the Holy Week. Concerts are held from the Friday before Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday.
Compositions of sacred music of all times are the traditional repertory, but also a wide range of world premieres, historical recoveries and infrequent works are offered. The program is rich and varied in musical terms.
Concerts are held in the traditional venues of the festival: the Theatre-Auditorium, the Cathedral, the old Saint Paul convent, the Church of San Miguel, the Church of la Merced, the Church of Arcas, the Church of Santa Cruz, the Chapel of the Hospital de Santiago, the Old Convent of the Carmelitas (Antonio Pérez Foundation), the Church of the Monastery of immaculate Conception (Concepción Francisca), the Convent of the Religiosas Justinianas de San Pedro (Petras); and in some new venues that are incorporated each year.

Cathedral

by andal13

Cuenca's Cathedral was built between 12th and 16th centuries; it's an unusual Gothic style building. Actually, it is not one of the magnificent and famous Spaniard cathedrasl, but its peculiar style makes it very attractive.

La Catedral de Cuenca fue construida entre los siglos XII y XVI; es un edificio de un inusual estilo Gótico.En realidad, no es una de las magníficas y célebres catedrales españolas, pero su particular estilo la hacen muy atractiva.

Museum of Spanish Abstract Art

by Aitana

The Hanging Houses contain this Museum since 1966. The artist Fernando Zóbel had acquired many works of artists from his generation. He was the main promoter of the museum, but also other artists, such as Gustavo Torner and Gerardo Rueda took part in the selection of pieces. Fernando Zóbel donated his collection to the Foundation Juan March in 1980. The Foundation completed the collection adding their own pieces and acquiring new ones.

Some of the artists whose pieces belong to the collection of the Museum are Eduardo Chillida, Martín Chirino, César Manrique, Manuel Millares, Antonio Saura, Eusebio Sempere, Antoni Tapies, Gustavo Torner, Gerardo Rueda and Fernando Zóbel.

The Museum also has a room for temporary exhibitions. In April 2010 the exposition was Tauromaquia, a series of aquatints by Picasso.

The Museum itself is a work of art. The details of the construction, the balconies and the views of the Huecar gorge from the windows are a good reason to enter even if you are not on abstract art.

Entrance fee: 3 €. Reduced, 1.50 €, for students, retired persons and groups. Free for people born in Cuenca and children under 10.
Tuesday to Friday, 11:00 -14:00 and 16:00-18:00. Saturday, 11:00 -14:00 and 16:00-20:00. Sunday, 11:00 -14:30. Monday closed.
