In 829 inhabitants of Toledo proclaimed the city independent of arabs. It was a reason for wars and sieges which went on two centures. In 1085 the city got free from the Arabian sovereignty by Christian armies under leadership Alfonso V - the king of Castile and Leon. Toledo became the capital of Castile, its political and cultural center. Toledian archiepiscopate was established there and the city became the center of the Spanish christianity.

Inside the cathedral, in the chapterhouse there are 13 wall paintings with portraits of archbishops of Toledo (two are by Goya). In the Sacrisity (which is now a small picture gallery) visitors can see the pictures by El Greco, Goya, Morales, van Dyck, Rapael, Titian and Mengs and a sculpture of St. Francis by Pedro de Mena.

is called Castilla-La Mancha, Don Quixote Country. the wonderful Molinos carefully restored and maintained, great reminder of medieval times and of course always good for a great pic, while in Toledo make time for this beautiful region, but beaware of the hot Middays heat, take a Siesta like the Spaniard do, or find a nice swimming hole
Olive Farms

On the lower hillsides driving through La Mancha country are groves of olive trees. The area is the 2nd most important region of Spain for olive growing and production and producing almost 15% of Spain’s olive oil. The oil is known for its very high quality.

Just about every souvenir shop in Toledo has wonderful displays of pottery amd plates etched in a traditional way. They also sell beautiful jewellery, especially wonderful hoop earings. Check these out, because exactly the same items are much more expensive in Madrid.
