We really enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Alfonso. English was spoken at the front desk and everyone seemed very friendly. Later after interaction with the local people we found this an exception to the rule. Toledo is probably the only town that we have visited in our travels that was unfriendly. At the best, the local people only tolerated us and the other tourists. We had a nice talk with a couple of the employees at the hotel and they were well aware of the attitudes of the locals. The staff expressed dismay about the attitudes of many of the local people stating that they relied on the tourist for their incomes and should be nicer to the tourists.
I can understand some of the bad feelings as during the day the town was literally over run with tourists!! You could hardly walk the streets due to the thousands of people. I think the locals just couldn't handle these people and it affected their dispositions.
