Day trip or worth staying for the night?
by leila12
My boyfriend and I are torn on this issue: should we stay in Toledo overnight or should we just make it a day trip? Thanks!

It depends on where are you coming from!! :-)
Now seriously, I guess you are thinking in doing that from Madrid. If you go there early in the morning you can spend enough time in Toledo to get a general idea. Off course if you enjoy spending time in every church or museum you may need more than one day.
I think that at night the city changes and it is nice to walk too, less crowed streets(many people do the day trip) and it is interesting. But if you don´t have much time, you can do it in one day.
Have fun.

We went for a day trip and it was perfect - we even had a very lengthy lunch.

As has been noted, you can certainly have a wonderful day trip, but my preference would be to spend at least one night in Toledo. I find that I get a better feeling of having visited a place if I spend one or even two nights. My wife and I spent 2 nights there and never ran out of things to see and do. I suggest you also take the tram ride that rings the city for some different and lovely views. It leaves from the center of town and is not expensive. Get a seat on the right side to better see the city as it will be on that side.

I could spend hours looking at El Greco's masterpiece. http://www.santotome.org/indexnew.html
Answer to your question I think depends on time of year. In winter I would want to complete my tour quickly ! In summer I want to take my time and enjoy the city especially in the warm evenings.
Check the visiting hours for the places to visit as maybe some days are closed.
You can get to Toledo by fast train but don't overlook the bus as it takes you nearer the city on arrival. The bus leaves from Plaza Elíptica Station - Madrid. Fast bus is one hour. And inexpensive.
Try to get a tourist guide before you go or look at this -

Wow! Thank you all for your responses. I am coming from Madrid which is close enough for a day trip, but I think I will stay for the evening. That will give me the opportunity to see the town once all of the tourists are gone. Thank you all!!!

plan a short visit

We enjoyed Toledo but made the mistake of spending two days there. You really can see most everything in one day.
We were surprised how unfriendly people were in town. The only spot in Spain that was like this. A local man told us it was because of the swarm of tourists that invaded the town everyday. The people were just plain tired of the tourists....
History
by Kuznetsov_Sergey
The history of Toledo is closely bound with the history of Spain. The city was one of the important spiritual and political centers of the country and one of the first city stirred to action against Muslim oppression. In spite of the fact that king Phillip II carried the capital to Madrid, there are a lot of magnificent monuments and a special timeless atmosphere of city from famous history of Toledo.

Consuegra ins the Province of Toledo and the region of Castile-La Mancha. Don Quixote who was known as the Mad Knight, made this region famous. His tales are depicted in the book written by Cervantes. Don Quixote apparently mistook the revolving arms of the windmills ot be giants and set off to attack them. Consuegra town is made up of a Municipal Museum, City Hall, Churches and the Tower of Tercia.
Wandering the streets
by alucas
I spotted this doorway in one of the narrow streets - don't ask me where, I know it was somewhere just north of the Cathedral, but we were lost at the time ! There are lots of fine doors in the side streets, all probably hundreds of years old.
Damascene
by alfredop about Arround Toledo
Another famous handicraft of Toledo is damascene, from the ancient Moorish art of interlacing gold on iron or steel, then firing it so the underlying material oxidizes and becomes black, with the gold in sharp relief. Every shop in Toledo will carry some form of damascene work, most frequently as small decorative plates and jewellery. Damascene also tends to be on the expensive side, so be sure to comparison shop around Toledo. Jewelry.
