Burgos Cathedral was built between 13th and 16th centuries; Gothic style predominates, although some elements of Renaissence can be found. It is positively magnificent.

La Catedral de Burgos fue construída entre los siglos XIII y XVI; predomina el estilo gótico, aunque presenta algunos elementos renacentistas; es absolutamente magnífica.

Arco de Santa María

Arco de Santa María, at the end of Santa María bridge, receives the visitors. The original building dates from 14th century, but it was rebuilt at 16th century; inside there is an exhibition centre.

El Arco de Santa María, al extremo del Puente de Santa María, recibe a los visitantes. La construcción original data del siglo XIV, pero fue reconstruida en el siglo XVI; dentro, se encuentra una sala de exposiciones.

Miraflores Monastery - Sculptures by Gil de Siloé.

The visit to the monastery of Miraflores is fully justified by the amazing highlights of sculptural art to be seen in the church.
There is the gilded and polychromatic altarpiece carved out of walnut wood (1496-1499) standing in the choir. This work is a jewel of late Gothic art. The altarpiece is original by its layout; the scenes fit in circles and radiate like a rose window.
In front of the altar stand the alabaster tomb (1489-1493) with the recumbent effigies of Isabella of Portugal and John II of Castille. The tomb has the form of a star with eight points and is regarded as one of the most beautiful of Spain. Along the wall is the alabaster tomb of the Infant Alonso. All these sculptures show a wealth of elaborate details and exuberant variety.

These masterpieces were made by Gil de Siloé considered as the best Master of sculptural art of Spain in the 15th century.
As he is also called Gil de Amberes (the name for Antwerp in Spanish); it is therefore possible that he came from the North. One indeed finds in his art a Flemish, French or Rhineland influence.

Semana De Alicante en Burgos - part 1

Cityof Alicante tohether with City of Burgos organized the Alicante Week in Burgos May17-21, 2005.
Celebrations of Alicante region culture and food included street fair, artesans and craft show, food tasting, musical and stage performances and procession of Alicante Beauties (see next travelogue).
We stopped in Burgos for one night on the way to Madrid and spent a wonderful evening at the fair.

What is Saturday night without the wedding!
