Estaré en León durante el mes de julio (2005), ¿qué tiempo hará durante esta temporada? ¿Qué hay de hacer en León? Pasaré 4 semanas.

Gracias.

In Leòn you sould visit the wonderful cathedral with very beautiful stained glass.

Not far from Leòn there is a small village; Castrillo de Los Polvazares. See my Spain pages...I have uploaded some nice pics about this place.

Travel Tips for León

Roman Past

by SirRichard

Leon was founded as a roman military camp of the Legio VII Gemina.
There is not much roman rests left, as it was just a military base, but still some tombs remain. You can see most of them in the cloister of the San Marcos Parador.

Tombstones Museum

by SirRichard

In the lower floor of the San Marcos Cloister you can find an original exhibition of tombstones, from roman times to the 19th century. Most of them are outside, so they can be visited for free enterinf from the Parador.
Some others are inside the Museo de Leon, so you will have to pay 1,2 euros to see them.

The Plaza Mayor

by pabertra

The Plaza Mayor in Leon is not grand in any manner, but it is a good place to go to find a cheap hostel or start La Marcha, the Spanish nightlife. Around midnight people of all ages congregate here, before heading into pubs and discotecas around 2 am. The most delightful thing about this plaza is the lovely Saturday morning market that almost unnoticeably emerges.

"Breathing space."

A beautiful city, Leon, with its wide avenues and open spaces, pedestrian zones and the river Bernesga providing shaded walks along its banks, always gives one the impression of being able to breathe.
Founded in 68 A.D. by the Romans, and called Legio Septime, the modern name, Leon is derived from that, the city played an important role in assuring the movement of gold from Las Medulas.
Once again the "Camino de Santiago" passes through here so no surprise to see loads of people walking around with rucksacks and pilgrims batons.

The plaza Mayor, with its lovely arcades and town hall gives on to lots of little nooks and crannies to explore in the old centre of Leon.

Looking up at the ex- Convent of San Marcos (now transformed into a hotel).
