"Ducal City."
Lerma is a beautiful Castilian city located 199 kms from Madrid on the highway to Burgos. The city was constructed on the top of a hill with great views of the Arlanza Valley and River.
The city reached it´s splendour during the 1,700´s under the reign of the first Duke of Lerma (Francisco Gomez de Sandoval y Rojas) a favourite of the King Philiph III of Spain. The main feauture of the city is the Palacio Ducal located at the Plaza Mayor, but also has some other interesting churchs and convents.
It´s my favourite stop when i´m driving from Madrid to Bilbao, there are some good restaurants at the Plaza Mayor.

"Feeling well at Lerma."
Lerma is one of these small towns of Castile where my family and I feel quite well as tourists.
I read that: "The first settlers in this area would be Celtic tribes with strange Nordic, although not barbarous, customs."
Those are my ancestors. The strange customs are that we have dinner at 7 pm and not at 10 pm!
Lerma has a Parador - historical monument - situated above the Rio Arlanza, on a height from where one discovers an endless horizon. A medieval gate and narrow alleys lead to a typical Plaza Mayor with arches. There are a fair number of churches and convents, and, most important for an epicurean, a traditional restaurant where we could eat and drink in all comfort.
A quiet town where we liked to return having spent the day visiting the more lively Burgos, the capital of the province.
Generally as a tourist one stays only once in a lifetime in a city like Lerma, but no doubt this small town leaves pleasant souvenirs.

Lerma, has been always in my memory as it was the place where the bus stopped before arriving to Aranda from Bilbao. I always loved to stop there as it meaned I was going to see grampa soon!!! lol (what can i say I was the spoil grandaughter hehehehe)
Last christmas due to mistaken timetables, after the meting of madrid, isntead of taking the bus to Aranda, we had to take the one to Burgos, so we stopped here, adn my family came to pick up us.
since that day, I am hearing to Stace saying " Carmen we have to come back, that castle on the top is great". he also checked on web apges (of course Sirricahrd had already a page lol) and at the end we visited this summer ...
Old buildings and lamb

Lerma is a little town in the province of BURGOS, north of Spain. You can pass by if you take the A1 highway from Madrid to Bilbao.
It's got a monumental city centre and here you can enjoy some of the best lamb menus in Spain.
Lerma is located by the A1 highway, 40 kilometres south of Burgos
"A walking city tour"
There's a few things to see in Lerma. You can leave the car at the Main Square and do a walking tour in about 1-2 hours.
There are useful touristic signs in front of the main monuments, telling you in 3 languages the history of each one.
