ponferrada is good sized industrial city in northwest castilla y leon. the main attraction of this city is the knights templar castle of ponferrada. the castle is in the center of the city and is surrounded by a medieval town. the name ponferrada comes from a medieval bridge erected for the pilgrims on their way to santiago de compostela. the castle was built by the knights templar between the 12th and 14th centuries to protect these pilgrams. during the middle ages the castle of ponferrada was one of the largest in northwest spain. next to the castle is the medieval quarter of town which is interesting.
