How easy is it to get a student job in Salamanca

by sdmoot

Between september and december 2010, i want to go to Salamanca. I wondered if its difficult to get a simple student job in Salamanca. I want to work besides going to a language school. Im 18 years old and i am fluent in Dutch, English and i hope i will become fluent in Spanish!

Thanks in advance!

As you may know job situation is not good in Spain lately. We have a very high rate of unemploiment...one of the higest in Europe.

I think your best bet to get some money should be to teach English. Maybe posting your details in student areas, offering your services. We "hired" an english speaking person for a year...we used to go to a pub or somewhere else, just to have conversation with her.

Good luck.

Honestly, it will be from very difficult to nearly impossible. Not only Spain is having one of the worse unemployment rates in Europe, Salamanca is (as you probably already know) an University town and a prime destination for foreign students willing to learn Spanish. Therefore, you will be competing with a number of both Spanish and foreign people for each part-time available job. You may be lucky, but better have a B-plan (= savings), just in case.

Thanks you very much for your reply! Do you also know something about the student job opportunities in Sevilla? Thank you in advance!

I don't think Sevilla will be much different. It will be easier (or better read, slightly less difficult) to find a job in any 'unknown' medium-sized inland town where no one wants to go... but I guess you don't either.

Besides, the months you are planning to go are just after the summer season, when many summer touristy business will close (so their summer employees will be hunting for winter jobs) and when students are returning to their classes (and may be looking for part time jobs too)

Sorry, I'd love to sound optimistic, but things are not looking good around here.

Churros

by DurhamTom

The Spanish love to start their day with a handful of "Churros" - fried batter sticks, and a cup of thick hot chocolate in which to dip them. Students love them to round off their nights out, first thing in the morning while other more mature people can use them as a sugar hit first thing in the morning. The best cafe serving them is on the street halfway between the Plaza Mayor and the Cathedrals, also an excellent site to people watch first thing in the morning.

Avila

by acemj

A little over an hour away from Salamanca is Avila. Its most striking feature is its city walls which have survived for almost a thousand years. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to visit and was only able to take this really horrible picture from the highway as we passed by on the bus.

Ice cream places

by fairy_dust

There are places in town where you can buy ice cream. There is a Ben & Jerry's in the Plaza Mayor, as well as a few other ice cream places in the same area. There are also some ice-cream stands on the streets, and in some corner stores, ice cream is available. In the summer it's very hot out, so knowing where to get ice cream can be useful!

Procezione

Going during the Easter in a Catholic country really means something different! All week long during the nights there were parades all over the city - really amazing - some even a bit scary with the music and songs...
