Where is Segovia ?

by Morepork

Please excuse my ignorance !

RE: Where is Segovia ?

by Geoff_Wright

Hola Audrey,

Long time, no chat! Segovia is a town in the Castilla Leon Region of Spain. I found this for you:

"Castilla León is not only the largest region of Spain, but as well the largest region of all European Union. The elevated plain is limited by the the mountain ranges Sistema Ibérico to the east, Cordillera Central to the south, Cordillera Cantábrica to the north and by Duero river towards Portugal."

Greetings from Cornwall, and Happy Easter.

Ciao

For a more graphical answer (if you are so inclined)...

Somewhat less than 100 kilometers northwest of Madrid. See http://www.viamichelin.com/viamichelin/gbr/dyn/controller/mapPerformPage?pim=true&act=RefineToMap&rnd=1111986311270&E_mg=210505088lS21J305087070732892636MAPB2C19103gbr542000130t1103844000ac2Vnb3ZpYQ00001100&stat=ambiguous_map&strChoice=0

The www.viamichelin.com site is very useful for locating cities in Europe as well as getting distances between two locations...

Hi Geoff,
Thanks for your reply. I was just being too lazy to look it up for myself but thought it would get the attention of someone.
That's interesting to know what a large area it is. I shall search more as I have probably travelled in that area from Figaras to Madrid airport !

Yes, I had a pleasant Easter at home. Stayed off our roads where it is safer !
But I spent a few days in my c/van at Muriwai beach the week before when weather was fab !
Happy Trails,
Audrey.

It's about an hour's drive northwest of Madrid. It's beautiful and well worth the trip!

You are about 18 months late with this information, LOL. The original poster returned home long ago!

Travel Tips for Segovia

Segovia Cathedral

by MarvintheMartian

It was constructed in the Gothic Style but was built on the remains of the old Cathedral which was destroyed by fire during the revolt of the Comuneros.
The building of this Cathedral started in 1525 under the direction of Juan Gil de Hontanon.

Tourist Info (La Granja)

by SirRichard

There is a little tourist info hut at the left side of this Monumental Gate to the town, in the lower part of it.
To get there, turn right from the entrance roundabout and go down the slope till you see this gate...
Here you can get a map, a list of the tourist attractions, hotels, restaurants, schedules of the Palace...

Like children everywhere else...

by morgane1692

kids in Segovia love to stop at the neighborhood candystand after school. I hope they have Reese's peanut butter cups here, or Sweettarts. As long as they leave the kiosk with something chocolate though, they're doing okay! ;-P

Segovia Landscape

by pinik

As for me, the most gripping thing about Segovia were the landscapes around the town. Especially as they are seen from the Tower of Juan II.
Yellow grass scorched by the hot Spanish sun, trees with green round crowns and sandy-coloured buildings of Segovia...

The scratched Pine Trees

by easyoar

When you are driving around Segovia Province, you will see numerous Meditterrainean Pine Trees with big gashes on their sides, as if some vandals have been at them.

In actual fact this is done officially (although it looks pretty ugly). It is a way of harvesting the resin in the pine tree.

I don't know what effect this has on the tree and its longevity. I can imagine it helps parasites penetrate the tree and do it lots of damage, but it seems to be a longstanding procedure, so perhaps it doesn't really effect the tree.
