Advance deposits on vacation apartments
by jfhhome
I have usually used credit card for deposit on vacation rentals. Several that I am considering request a bank transfer of 20% deposit. Comments on safety of this method and insurance that apartment will be there when I get there would be welcomed!

The request for a deposit is very normal. The guarantee that the apartment will be there and that it will correspond to the description that was given is a different matter. For this you should look for comments by other customers.

If the person that you are planning to rent from is a small operation, they quite likely do not have enough business to justify the costs of a credit card operation. I've paid for things for vacations like this before, but understood the risks and researched the seller before advancing the money. Things worked out well for me doing business this way.

If they request a bank transfer, it is likely that an individual, who owns the appartment, is renting it out and does not have a CC account for deposit as suggested above.
I rented an apartment in Sitges this way and had no problem. However, be sure that you correspond with the owner prior to sending the money.
Have fun in Barcelona!

Thanks everyone who weighed in. I have located my three apts for a week each in Barcelona, Seville, and Madrid. I am using vacation rentals. com and homelidays.com as they both provided lots of guest testimonials. I have also requested paypay instead of bank transfer. I also found a good sounding hotel room in Granada for two nights so we can see Alhambra which several people suggested on another forum. Getting excited! Thanks again. Jill

Greetings,
I am a native Bostonian now living in Barcelona (a few blocks from the port). I moved here in 1999, from Cape Cod Massachusetts. In 2008 HarperCollins published my memoir, Bringing Home the Birkin, which went on to became a bestseller and is now published in 9 languages. Anyhow, I am now writing my 2nd book, Barcelona Native: The Spanish Seasoning of an American Expat, which will be published in 2011. Should you require any information about Barcelona feel free to drop me a line as I sit at my computer writing all day and will be able to provide you with a fairly rapid, and informative response. michael~

Photo: Catalonian's Region Flag 'La senyera'. There are many differences between the regions in Spain. In Catalonia, there are two official languages: Spanish and Catalonian. Catalonian is spoken by more than 7 million people (more than Danish, Norwish Finish...!), and is a very beautiful language. People in Barcelona and in the rest of catalonia is nice and open-minded and will help you if you have any problem, so don't worry! ;ยท)
La Ribera/Born
by iguana23
Not only is this neighbourhood home to the PIcasso and the Textile museums, it also is full of bars and restaurants.
You would never know it if you walked through Born during the daytime though. It's all narrow medieval alleys and atmsopheric little spots.
At night, the shutters come up, and all those buildings you thought were just apartments turn out to be bars and neighbourhood restaurants.
Although this area is only about 10/15 minute walk from the Ramblas (on the other side of Via Laetiana), not many tourists seem to make it over there. It's quite a trendy/up and coming neighbourhood, and a lot of the small shops feature clothes by young designers.
