Christmas in Barcelona

by bookmoretimeoff

I am planning a surprise trip to Barcelona at Christmas and am trying to get some details of attractions, restaurants etc that will be open. We will arrive on the morning of 26th (which I know is a holiday) and will be staying 2 nights. Its particuarly 26th (St Stephens Day)that I would like to plan ahead for. We will be staying in 1898 Hotel of Las Ramblas. I would like to go for something to eat and then ot The Magic Fountains as we have never been before. Any advice much apprceiated. Thanks.

This is a good link for Font Magica - best to check the days and dates as they do not operate every night.

Thanks Tango jd. Do you have any details on Christmas in BCN - particuarly St Stephens Day? Worried it might be a damp squib if very little open!

Sorry no - we were there in February.
The hotels will be open though - and there is a big hotel just down by the towers on Placa D'Espanya (huge road roundabout)which is useful for toilets since there are very few near the fountain!

Hi Barcelona is quite quiet at Christmas, and St. Stephen's day is a family day, they usually meet for lunch and then often go for a stroll. The shops will be closed though some tourist shops and possibly some shops in Maremagnum may be open. A lot of restaurants will only open for lunch but some will be open, after all Barcelona is a tourist city. the site the previous poster gave you links to also has useful information on Christmas including a list of restaurants that will be open

As others said, Dec 26 will be very quiet, even there is always something to do in Barcelona.

Plan your day for 'outdoors' sightseeing. Some attractions will be open during the morning as Sagrada Familia (9 a 14 h, but I guess it will be crowded) and some museums.

The Font Magica shows will be on 19/ 19.30/ 20 /20.30 h according www.bcn.cat

Poble Espanyol will be open all day, if this it is your kind of thing. I think CaixaForum will be open too, it's just next the Magic Fountains.

Many restaurants will close but you still will find many places to eat or have a drink in the city centre and the seafront.

enjoy your trip!

Travel Tips for Barcelona

Take a cable car up to the Castle on Mount Juca. Only then did I fully appreciate the full scale of the city. A most breathtaking vista. Like Madrid, the atmosphere is superb, nothing quite like it. La Rambla, whilst overrated (imho)is a good place to people watch.

Visit the ST Josep Market.

by sheryl_tan

This is the oldest market in Barcelona. One can almost find anything here. You will find fresh produce here. Expect to get very cheap fruits during Spring. Even if you are not buying, just walk around and see what the stalls have to offer. I can tell you that it can be quite interesting.

Copito de Nieve or "Snowflake"

Sadly, Snowflake, the only known albino gorilla in the world has died of skin cancer in November 2003. He was the main attraction of the Barcelona Zoo. He was 38 years old, and conceived 33 successors, but none of them white as he was.

Shopping: My Kinda Nightlife!

by SusanJH about El Corte Ingles

I spent three hours one night just wandering around. One of the upper floors 6-8 - I'm not sure - is the bargain floor! Lots of neat stuff. I wish I had gone back. Probably the best part is the supermarket downstairs below the main level. It's a great place to shop for local goodies and to find lots of yummy things to bring home to friends and family. I bought coffee, chocolate, cookies and more. It was fun to just wander around. I felt very safe in Placa Catalunya even at 10 p.m. After all, that's just when dinnertime starts! El Corte Ingles also has a nice tourist shop. A bit pricier than shopping at the tourist shops on Las Ramblas but some nice things. Coffee, chocolate and cookies were very reasonable.
