After a few nights staying in a cheap apartment in Barcelona, we decided at the last minute to extend our trip and had to find somewhere else to stay. A bit of research bought us to Hotel Jazz, a newish hotel only a short walk from Placa Catalunya. Although the Hotel Jazz is only classed as a 3 star hotel, we thought it had been under-rated. This is a modern hotel, beautifully appointed and centrally located hotel - and for 110 euro a night we though very good value.
The hotel has a roof top pool (which we didn't use as we stayed in winter), a bar, and free internet (in the bar area). All staff we had contact with were friendly and helpful. Our room was on the 7th floor, offering good views over the busy streets below. There was two very comfy beds (that could be pushed together if required), a flat screen TV, mini-bar and a spacious bathroom. I would recommend Hotel Jazz for someone wanting a stylish place to stay, close to Placa Catalunya. | | | | Living Ramblas 2 - Apartment: Living Ramblas 2 - Apartment in Barri Gotic | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
On our second visit to Barcelona my sister Alison came along with us and we decided to stay in an apartment, as it was cheaper than two hotel rooms. After browsing numerous apartment rental sites I came across a site that I liked (gobcn apartments) and an apartment that looked good, called "Living Ramblas 2". When we arrived at the airport, I phoned the apartment representative, Hana, and she said she would meet us at the apartment. It was very centrally located - on a small paved street, just off La Rambla. The apartment was located in a run-down looking building, on the 6th floor....and there was no lift :-/
I must admit to being disappointed by the apartment - it didn't look as nice as it did on the website....though I think I was expecting too much for 110 euro a night in such a central location. It was a lot older than it had appeared online, and it was very cold (we stayed in winter)! There was a small heater in the living area which did nothing at all to heat the flat - luckily there were heaters in the two main bedrooms which at least heated those rooms if left on for a few hours. The apartment was pretty basic and the small bathroom was dirty. Linen and towels were provided, though the towels smelt musty. I am not painting the best picture am I! Oh - I just remember the best/worst part - the ceiling was filled with RATS!! We could hear them scurrying around day and night. Not pleasant. | | | | Hotel Cuatro Naciones: Hotel Cuatro Naciones - La Rambla Cheapy | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
When we visited Barcelona back in Oct 2003 we wanted somewhere cheap and central to stay, and chose Hotel Cuatro Naciones. This hotel is located right on La Rambla, just near Placa Reial. Staff were friendly and helpful, and we enjoyed our stay at this grand-looking old hotel. Our room was spacious and clean, with a large modern bathroom. It was at the rear of the building so we didn't have any issues with street noise.
Breakfast was included in our room rate, and was served in the grand old dining room, over looking La Rambla. The price of a double room is currently 85 euro (Feb 2007), which is quite good value for the location. It is by no means a luxury hotel, but we found it comfortable and ideal for our needs. | | | | Hostal Levante: Central Location/Great Accomodation in Barcelona Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
I cannot say enough about the Hostal Levante! It was simple, but far exceeded our expectations. I actually heard about it from an entry on Rough Guides. I made our reservations by email from their website: (www.hostallevante.com/eng). The website was very informative and even provided an accurate map which helped us to find the hostel. We stayed in a two-person, twin-bed, ensuite room. The room was very clean and simple. My only complaint is that it was VERY hot in the room! It must have been over some pipes or something because no matter what we did, it was like a sauna in the room! The room didn't have any outside windows, but there was a window which led to a interior courtyard sort of thing, which did not provide any cool air. Thankfully there was a fan in the room (they obviously know about the problem because our friends' room didn't have a fan). Our friends had an exterior room, which they said was very loud at night when people were coming back from the bars. Our room was very quiet thanks to the fan, I think. There was no telephone or television in the rooms, but there is a lounge area with a TV right off of the lobby. The best thing for us about this hostel was that we could leave our luggage in the TV room after we checked out and before our late-night flight! The desk is open 24 hours, so it was certainly safe. The hostel is located just off of La Rambla with plenty of restaurants and bars nearby. It is also within walking distance of some major sights (Barcelona Cathedral, Picasso Museum, and La Rambla). We paid about $55 a night for our ensuite twin room. If you are looking for a place to simply rest your head and if you can do without amenities, this is the place for you! I HIGHLY recommend the Hostale Levante! | | | | Continental Barcelona: Not a place I would recommend. Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
I'll start with the positive because it's the nicest things I can say about this hotel. The personnel was very friendly and always willing to help. The breakfast was decent and included with the room price, the location of the hotel was ideal. Right on La Rambla and next to Plaça de Catalunya. Now for the not so good things. The rooms (we had two) were very run down. From some of the oldest, decrepit furniture, to ugly (and old) wallpaper, poor ventilation, tiny rooms, unfinished ceilings, and carpets I'd be scared of touching with my hands let alone my bare feet. I was as you can tell, extremely disappointed by my stay, especially when the leg of the bed broke off. It was metal!!! Very rusty metal! Perhaps it's sister hotel is a bit better as it is more expensive.
The best thing it has to offer is it's location and a friendly staff. | | | | Hostal Girona: HOSTAL GIRONA | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
This is a pretty basic place, facilities wise. There are no meals or communal areas and you basically just have your room. I had a single room with ensuite shower/toilet and it also had a TV, ceiling fan and heating. That was all I was looking for really as I'm used to hostels but just wanted a room to myself for once. If you are looking for something fancier or meals provided this isn't the place for you. I got the impression that its a family run place and it is basically like two seperate flats on the first floor of the building. They have single, double and 4 bed rooms - some ensuite and some internal rooms, such as mine, where the windows look over the inner atrium rather than the street. I had no complaints other than the "international TV" described on the website being limited to one French channel and a load of Spanish ones!
The good thing about this place, aside from the price if you are on a budget, is that is it is in a much quieter area of town than if you stay at one of the many places near Las Ramblas or the Barri Gotic where there are a lot of bars and noise at nighttime. Some people like being near that stuff, I just like getting a good nights sleep after sightseeing all day!! It is located within easy walking distance of Las Ramblas and most of the main attractions though. I just walked to most places in the city centre For me the fact that it was also close to the Estacio del Nord was a bonus as I was flying into Girona Airport and the shuttle buses take you to the bus station there. The hotel is only a 500 m walk from there.
