where to stay, what to do
by rkearns
fellow solo female traveler here.
i went and it was as safe as any large city can be. just use common sense.
i stayed at the kabul backpacker's hostel just off las ramblas. it's one of the best hostels i've ever been to, or at least it was in '05.
make sure to visit "la boqueria". it's one of the best markets in all of europe. the transportation is great, but it's more of an international city. unlike madrid, you will get a little more watered down version of spanish culture. but it still has lots of great stuff! gaudi, of course, proximity to dali's hometown, the picasso museum, lots of great food, a beach, tons of art and great food.
you're going to have a blast. like the above poster said, it's a good idea (in any city imo) to bring just enough cash for what you need for the day. bring a padlock if you stay in a hostel, so if they don't have the locks for the lockers, you have a way to protect your things. just don't be flashy, carry a purse, like you would in your own hometown, and enjoy walking around. i think it's safe, and i've been all over europe, south america and a small part of asia.
here's the website to the hostel:

Barcelona: A world of food. Dont eat on the rambla
by Shaz68
One of the best things i found when i visited barcelona was that there was such a variety of food from around the world. My husband isnt a big fan of spanish food, but that wasnt a problem because there are loads of restaurants from all over the place. You can get curry, thai, sushi, american, italian.. anything really! We stayed in a hotel in an area called eixample which was particularly good for restaurants and much cheaper than round the ramblas where everything was a bit expensive.
Places id particularly recommend was a jamaican place we visited for lunch called Stush and Teng. We had lunch for about 15 euro each with 3 courses and bread and wine and water and the food was lovely. I found a review of it here: http://www.barcelona-metropolitan.com/reviews/rasta-relief
And we also went for a pizza one evening here which was also lovely and not too pricey for what you got. I found a review for this one too: http://www.barcelona-metropolitan.com/reviews/whats-for-lunch-non-solo-pizza
Hope that helps. Remember dont eat on the ramblas, if you want a cheap meal, hop on the metro to find quality for less.

Sector Naval de Catalunya

This building apprears to be a naval office of some sort. I doubt you can actually go inside, but it is so nice to know that at the foot of Las Ramblas, they actually do perform useful labor. There are security cameras and police about.
