A few things I learned while in Barcelona
I spent hours reading various reviews. I chose Colon Hotel because I wanted to be in the Medieval District and I was very pleased to find that the Hotel had a cheaper rate than any of the travel sites i looked at (expedia, hotels.com etc.) it was 50 euros less in total. Room was clean and well maintained. They turned down the bed at night. I didnt have any view but then i was only in my room at night and the cathedral is covered from top to bottom in a tarp anyway so the only view would be of the square. Front staff helped me a lot finding the things I wanted (saffron, second hand market etc.) apparently a number of well known people stayed here, why i dont know given the price (80 euros a night) people like Francis Ford Coppola, and 'that lady from Oprah was here last week' ...that comment from the bellhop made me laugh. I guess he meant Oprah's friend Gail? and yes, the rooms are small but this is Europe after all.
Oh, final hotel point. avoid staying on La Ramblas. you will want to walk it but it is a wide street full of cars and noises. all the shops seem to be selling cheap crappy tshirts etc. and in the evening hours, it is full of loud and sometimes drunk teenagers. Okay, that is about it. i am writing this because I found other people took the time to post things that were very helpful!
Unique Quality: I quickly learned a few things. 1. use the metro. if you dont stay at this hotel, find a hotel near the metro. it is great and gets you everywhere cheaply (buy a book of 10 for 6.90). 2. dont use the bus turistic. it is 19 euros for 1 day or 23 for 2, but it has 3 circle routes meaning if you get off at one point, you have to go all away around to get back...there is not bus going one way and another going the opposite direction on the same street if you get what I mean. - well at least not for most of their route. Besides, if you want to hear about the sites, just buy a good book on the city before hand. the coupons that come with it are a waste...woo, get 2 McDonald's hamburgers for the price of 1, or 80 cents off your ticket to Gaudi house...3. if you stay by the beach you are away from a lot of where you want to go. 4. the city is cheaper than i expected. i never paid more than 2.10 for a beer or 1.20 for a coke in a restaurant. but then i didnt eat out a lot because i rather sightsee and nibble on a chocolate (spanish chocolate is good, as is their meat, their bread and beer is bad) 5. the castle fortress on montjuic is boring. i have been to many castles and fortresses, but this was dull and the military museum said nothing at all about the spanish civil war. the picasso museum was interesting even if you dont like his work because it is all his early stuff when he was learning to draw as a teenager and up. only a few later pieces.
Oh, and if you take the bus from Girona to Barcelona, there is more than one bus that goes back and forth. I got the schedule and it said the bus left at 415 but because Ryan air is misleading about the times it arrives (it arrives 30 minutes earlier than they say so they can then claim they are always early) there was a bus leaving just as I got out, otherwise I would have to wait 1 hour. same for the way back. the schedule said 915 am, but I got to the bus station at 815am and there was a bus at 815 and 830 too. bus takes 1 hour and 10 minutes.
