Local's point of view

by vivispy

Hi guys,

Im interested in knowing the must see places in Barcelona, and areas/places to avoid (safety, too touristy) from a local's point of view.
Thank you!

Hi,

Not a local but have been visiting friends in Barcelona 2 or 3 times a year for over 20 years. There is a very good list of the must see sights here

http://tinyurl.com/ykovzby

Some are touristy by definition of being the best sights, a couple of local favourites that many tourists will miss are Santa Maria del Mar, and Palau de la Musica. Two that most locals would avoid as total tourist traps are Poble Espanyol and Las Ramblas. The only area to avoid from a safety point of view is the bottom half of the Ramblas late at night and the Lower Raval to the right of the bottom end of the Ramblas as you face the sea, this is the red light district.

Hello viv,
The inevitable question: what are your interests? "Must-sees" vary depending on interest. Give us more to go on and we can make some useful suggestions.

El xocolata (the Chocolate)

by Danalia

2 oz of a black chocolate bar
3 teaspoons maizena (cornflour)
1 cup milk
Sugar, depending on your preference

Thin out the maïzena in some milk. In a saucepan, melt the chocolate, which should be cut in small pieces, or better, grated. Add the milk gradually, then, the maizena and the sugar. Cook over a low heat while stirring constantly till the mixture thickens. Eat with churros (doughnuts that can be found in the frozen food section of hypermarkets).

Every Sunday afternoon during the summer. A mass of people congregate in the parks neer the Olympic stadium for a session of drumming. Up to a thousand people sit around drumming and dancing, Street vendors walk around selling beer and other 'stuff'. The drumming continues into the early night.

The Mercat St. Josep has been here since 1836, it is a covered Catalan market that is always bustling with tourists and locals alike as they wander among the colourful, neatly stacked stalls of fruit, vegetables, fish and meat.
