Reserved 2 rooms for 4 nights for two couples. One included breakfast - identified on room card BB (bed and Breakfast). When this couple went to have breakfast, they were told to pay. They explained they had breakfast included and the server told them they did not, argued and insisted on payment 3 separate times during breakfast in front of all other guests. Finally, the server told the couple to speak to the front desk (before the could even finish breakfast), the wife told the front desk they had prepaid breakfast and it was on their room car folder upstairs - she was told to go and get it. She did. She was then told the card was wrong! BB was written on the wrong guest card. The wife explained it didn't matter because they were accompanying the couple in the other room and both rooms were under her name and paid by her - but Naomi told her that didn't matter. The couple finally requested to speak to the manager. He apologized and offered both couples breakfast the next day. The next day the husband of the additional couple presented himself for breakfast compliments of the manager - her was told to pay, went to the front desk, to Namoi, and she told him he was to pay. The manager came out and apologized, said he'd told the personnel to provide breakfast for all and to disregard these employees, but when the couples returned to their rooms, their keys no longer worked - so they had to go to the front desk to ask Naomi for help when they wanted in their room. Upon leaving, Naomi, front desk, tried to collect for the breakfast once again!
First, it was highly embarrassing to be approached 3 times during breakfast in front of all other guests. Second, it was unprofessional to blame the guests if BB was written on the wrong card! The customer had paid for both rooms and both were under her name - there was never any dispute she'd paid for 2 breakfasts - she was told she couldn't apply the two to the paid breakfast! What a fiasco!!! And we can all only surmise there is some control issue Naomi has with the manager - obviously neither she or the woman overseeing breakfast have any respect for him whatsoever.
Rooms were pleasant enough, on the small side, but the experience with personnel ruined the stay.

Boutique hotel near the harbour Barcelona

    by

If you plann to visit Barcelona on your arrival, I can recommend you a hotel near the cruise port: it's called Duquesa de Cardona. It's little, comfortable and very cosy: www.hduquesadecardona.com

Unique Quality: - Little and comfortable boutique hotel.
    - Great views from the Terrace on the top floor: you can see the harbour of Barcelona
    - Very closed to the harbour for cruisers
    - Warm decorated
    - The nicest restaurant I have seen ever: it was the main entrance of a XVI century Palace. Between classic and modern, beautiful colors
    - Situation of the hotel: Ramblas, Gothic Area, Barceloneta, Born, all closed by
    - Personal service

Directions: At the end of the Ramblas and the harbour is in front of you, turn left into Passeig Colom Street, nr 12

  • Highly recommended

An excellent hotel overlooking the marina. The view of the rooftop bar is superb, especially at night. The hotel also has a swimming pool on the roof but this is rather small and better for cooling off than swimming.

Unique Quality: Close to all facilities including the Ramblas, marina and public transport.

    Directions: Overlooking the marina

    Breakfast on the rooftop

    by

I'm including this tip as a "Don't Bother" tip. Our hotel, the Duquesa de Cardona, had a rooftop terrace with a very small pool, which was kind of nice, and guests had the option of eating breakfast on the terrace. That sounded nice to us, so we signed up for that. With 50/50 hindsight, I now can say it is not worth it. What we didn't know when we signed up is it is 3 times the cost of eating breakfast in the very nice restaurant on the ground floor. The food was ok, but nothing to write home about. In contrast, the breakfast at our first Barcelona hotel, the Hotel 1898, was far better. The view is ok, but not worth the price of the breakfast.

If you are staying at this hotel, you could try breakfast downstairs, or better yet, walk 5 minutes to the Mercat and pick up fresh fruit, fresh juices, cheese and bread. You can always come up to the rooftop terrace for a glass of Spanish wine in the afternoon.

Unique Quality: Price range and ratings in this tip refers to breakfast only at the Duquesa de Cardona.

    Hotel in Ciutat Vella

    by

This is another good hotel is a very good location. Just on the edge of Ciutat Vella, the Duquesa de Cardona is on Passeig Colon and faces the Mediterranean. Although you won't get expansive views of the sea, a room facing the street will have a rather pleasant harbor view. The hotel has good access to Ciutat Vella, La Rambla, Puerto Olimpico and several museums.

Unique Quality: Everything worked very well in the rooms. Beds were comfortable, showers were good, water was hot, air conditioning was quiet. This is a good place for a comfortable night's stay. The staff is very helpful and friendly. A business center with free internet access is located on Floor 1.

Quaint hotel near the Gothic Quarter

by TripAdvisor Member Kauai50

The Hotel Duquesa De Cardona was a wonderful quaint hotel in a superb location. It was located within walking distance of the Gothic Quarter and Las Ramblas. We spent two nights there prior to taking a cruise. Though the rooms were small, they were very clean. AND, we had a view from our french doors of one of the quaint narrow streets in the Gothic Quarter. The bathroom was huge, with a shower AND a tub and a bidet. They even have a computer you can use in the lower level with FREE internet!

Great hotel, great location

We have just returned from a five day break at Duquesa De Cardona and can highly recommend it. Travelling for a short break with another couple we found the location great, the hotel was great and the air conditioning superb - great as the temperature was over 90 degrees throughout our stay. The pool on the roof is small but makes a very welcome addition to this hotel to cool down in after a day sight seeing or sunbathing at the beach which is a mere 10 minutes walk away. We had paid for sea view rooms which were located on the fourth floor and found this to be clean, ample size and very nicely decorated.

The bus touristica is a must and takes you to all the high spots of Barcelona. The Pablo Espagnol is great for shops and the Park Guell is a must, we spent nearly a whole day there! Found all the restaurants great with Boga Boga nearby excellent.

The staff at the hotel were more than helpful and any requests we made for additional pillows and towels for the pool were with us within minutes. We didn't arrive in Barcelona until evening and I did ring the hotel to confirm our late arrival, they noted this on our booking and this was not a problem. We will return to the hotel and would certainly recommend it to family and friends.

Enjoyable stay in Barcelona

by TripAdvisor Member WaltonReviews

The hotel is well situated for the marina, Las Ramblas and many other city tourist spots. Although there is a busy main road in front of the hotel the room we stayed in was well soundproofed so noise was not a problem. The reception staff were very friendly and the rooms were tidyied on a daily basis and restocked with toiletries and linen. The standard rooms are smaller than expected but were very clean. We did not use the breakfast facilities of the hotel as there are plenty of very reasonably priced cafes nearby.

One concern I did have was that the hotel were storing linen and rollaway beds on the escape stairs!

I would recommend this hotel for a short stay.

Stay here to be close to lively Las Ramblas but not on it!!

by TripAdvisor Member Sussexbabe

We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights for our honeymoon. It is beautifully decorated and a very calming environment. Our room was huge with lots of space and although it faced the street there was never much noise at all. In fact the room was wonderful to come into after a hard day's walking as it had air-con. A real bonus was the electronic safe in the room which you programme with your own code when you arrive - that meant that we could leave everything (passports, extra cash, cards) in our room with no worries at all.

The hotel is really well placed. It is 5 minutes walk to the bottom end of Las Ramblas (where there is also a metro station) or you can walk up through the old streets parallel to Las Ramblas to get to Placa de Catalunya - about a 20/25 minute walk from the hotel if you don't get distracted by other stuff! Cross the road in front of the hotel and walk over to Barceloneta & the beach - about 10-15 minutes walk with plenty of cafes on the way.

We booked room only and didn't use the hotel for any food. The cost of food in the hotel struck us as expensive and so we used the cafes in the local area for breakfast - if you turn right when you come out of the hotel and walk towards Las Ramblas there is a little square a few minutes walk away. We breakfasted at tables in the square (2 coffees and croissants for 3 euros!) which was lovely in the summer sunshine. We also had breakfast twice at a cafe (La Gondeleria i think) which was down the street which runs at the back of the little square, walking towards Las Ramblas still - that was also good value and friendly. And also at the back of the little square is a restaurant called Fresco which is one of about 5 across Barcelona. There is a set charge for lunch or dinner (7 or 9 euros which includes a glass of wine!) and then you eat as much as you like from the delicious selection of salads, pasta and pizza.

Overall, the hotel gave us a good base from which to explore Barcelona as it is well placed for the old town, Las Ramblas and the beach.

great hotel,great location

by A TripAdvisor Member

We stayed at this hotel for five nights during August. The hotel is housed in a lovely historic building directly overlooking the marina, close but not too close, to Las Ramblas, on the edge of barri gothic quarter. The rooms are contemporary with very comfortable beds and luxury bathrooms. We were fortunate enough to be 'upgraded' to a room at the front with a great view across the marina and across to barcaloneta, although rooms at the rear have a nice aspect onto an interesting street. Service was faultless, all our requests to reception for extra towels for the pool, coathangers etc. were dealt with in less than ten minutes. The roof top terrace and plunge pool is a lovely place to chill out after a busy day in the city. Take a day trip on the train to Sitges, ( 30 mins) for a great day out, if you have the time, although there is so much on offer in the city itself.... A lovely comfortable character hotel.

Loved this hotel

by TripAdvisor Member Hylasgirl

First, I don't know how anyone could say that this hotel was "quite a way" from Las Ramblas??? It was right around the corner. We are going to Barcelona again next year and we have reserved our same room that we had last year. It was a beautiful hotel. Very nice sized rooms and awesome bathrooms, plus it had great A/C and a great view from the roof top restuarant and pool. We had room 33 and it had a small balcony that looked out over the marina and it was awesome. We could easily walk to Port Olympic (where there are WAY more options in dining than Las Ramblas has) The staff was friendly and for next year we booked with them direct... didn't bother with Expedia, and we just had to give them a CC # to hold the room... with Expedia you have to pay up front.

hotel Barcelona near the port

by brittdk

Regarding the travellers looking for accomodation near the harbour of Barcelona:
I spent some days in Barcelona on May, and I stayed on Duquesa de Cardona hotel. It is in front of the harbour, on Passeig Colom street. It has a terrace on the top where you actually visualize the harbour and you can even have some cocktails and tapas ( these are small portions of typical spanish food, very common there ). Even some of their rooms have this view. It's near by the cruise ship area, but you also walk to Ramblas, the Gothic area, etc. The location is just perfect, and this little hotel is very cosy
