We had a great time at the Planamar

by TripAdvisor Member woozysss

We were in Malgrat staying at the Planamar for the last week of April
'07 and we had a great time there. The people on here moaning must have been expecting a world class resort.

We were all inclusive and we ate so much. I avoided the meat but my boyfriend thoroughly enjoyed it all (apart from the last nights meal). There were fantastic fresh fish dishes every day. Always a really good veggie option too, and lovely pastas, salads and roast potatos, chips, mash, sauted potatos etc. Also fab dessert options of watermelon, strawberries, ice cream etc. I am quite a fussy eater and there was always something I enjoyed, I didnt hear anyone complaining about the food.

With an all inclusive hotel and unlimited drinks you have to expect some noise. We were on the first floor directly above the disco, probably one of the noisiest rooms. Only on our very last night we had trouble sleeping and this was due to birthday celebrations in the room next door. It was the end of the quiet season when we were there so mainly elder people and families were visiting. I wouldnt want to stay here in high season, purely due to the unlimited bar and the noise and problems that might cause.

The pool was good, a bit chilly but soon warmed up. It was super sunny while we were there and you have to make sure you nab a sun lounger in the morning as so many people lay their towels and then vanish. Malgrat itself is ok, not a whole lot to do apart from look in the shops. My boyfriend took a trip to Barcelona one day and Girona another, an hour either direction. Girona in his opinion was far superior to Barcelona and well worth the trip.

The beach is close to the hotel although there is such a steep drop in the sea close to the shore it would not be safe for children.

All in all we really enjoyed our stay at the Planamar. The staff are not rude as other people have mentioned. If you are rude to them they
may not be quite so polite, but be friendly and treat them like human
beings and you won't have a problem. Def recommended. Oh and to get there, train from Airport to Sans, then get the train to Blanes and get off at Malgrat.

Clean rooms, rubbish food!

by TripAdvisor Member SDJames1979

Just got back from staying there, and thought I would look up some comments other people made!

First thing first! As rooms go, they are neat, clean and most importantly have (slightly noisy) Air-Con!

The staff are hard working and great. As someone else pointed out, if you are polite and make an effort, even just saying "gracias" at the end of ordering their free drinks you would be surprised at the service.

I speak Spanish, and had a fantastic conversation with most of the staff (The other staff were either English or Dutch), and while not everyone speaks the lingo, even all my friends who came along noticed that just by saying thank you in the local dialect made the whole experience ten times better.

Some people said the staff had grumpy moments, sadly I would say this was the attitude of some of the guests that rocked the boat for everyone. Not sure how you would feel having 20 or so drunken lads all asking for beer and then taking the proverbial out of you while your doing it! Don't think anyone could keep a smile on their face all day long!

Whilst on the subject, we never noticed any problems with other guests, apart from the over indulgence in the free booze! Although while we were staying there was mainly an elder or family selection of guests. We were the only stag party there, and everyone got involved with the celebrations on the saturday night (taking photos and clapping along to the stag being made to dance etc!).

On the subject of the free booze, its cheap local plonk! Don't go expecting the finest wine, beer or spirits! It aint! however if you want a drink and are not overly bothered with it being the finest vintage, then it's drinkable!

The only real downside however is the food.

Don't eat the meat! It's raw and we believe it was the cause of a couple of cases of food poisoning (Even some non-drinkers were feeling bad). The burgers were raw inside, and everything was fried and then left under hot lights. The salad was passable, but for a couple of euro's you could walk along the strip and find some fantastic, cheap, food.

So all in all, a good hotel if you want a place to sleep, thats in a good location and not too bothererd about the quality of the booze!

However if you are after a place that is more than that, I would suggest elsewhere.

And definately avoid the burgers!

fine for price

we booked last minute as wanted to get away from the dreadful british "summer". All we wanted was some sun some beer and a bed. Yes the food wasnt amazing but this is a 3* hotel - therefore you get what you pay for, although saying that you are able to take some meals in the other 4* hotels - you therefore get more than you paid for! At the end of the day the food was edible and for a weeks stay that was fine.
There have been numerous postings about the staff at the hotel being miserable, we found them nothing but friendly and a great laugh - saying that it was possibly our attitude with them that got that response. If you were miserable/abusive etc with me i'd probably be the same back. The only problem waas trying to get them to give you smaller measures!
This hotel is set in a great location in Malgrat, opposite the beach and near the lively bars and shops.
What made the holiday for us were the people we met there so big hello and thanks to the essex boys Ian,Neil & John - the Cleethorpes coach party (hope you have now arrived home after your 26 hour journey home) and especially the Blackpool Golden Girls, big love and heres to the reunion session in our local!

The Worst Week Of My Life!!

by TripAdvisor Member disgusteddiva

I am not normally the type of person who would write a review and post it on the internet but today I have just come back on holiday from the Planamar hotel in Malgrat de Mar and felt complelled to warn others. My friend and I booked a last minute deal at this hotel wanting a nice relaxing break before the end of the summer. In all honesty, it was absolutely awful, on many levels. The food is quite literally inedible and we had to eat out at least once a day, which is ridiculous considering we had paid for all inclusive. It was just the same thing night after night and the food that wasnt eaten the day before was just left out until it had gone. The choice was absolutely minimal and as a vegetarian pretty much all I could eat was the salad which was brown around the edges. The fruit that we had was bruised and ripe beyond belief. No only did I find a piece of plastic in my jelly but my friend saw a flea on the table next to ours whilst we were eating one night. Besides the food there are many other problems we ahd to face such as a room three floors up with a view of a huge construction site containing 3 diggers and a drill which woke us up at around 7 or 8 every morning. There was also a generator that made continual noise throughout the night aswell as the day. The reception staff were rude and very unhelpful to us and the bar staff were over friendly to say the least. The rooms are very small as are the bathroom and the sheets had cigerette burns in them. There is no sauna, gym, jacuzzi or any night time entertainment as promised. The transfer is a joke and takes at least 1 and a half hours instead of the stated '20 minutes.'
The only positive things about the place is that the beach is quite close and pleasant although does get a bit tiresome. There are activities to do but they are quite expensive and require a mode of transport. There is a very nice English pub I would highly recommend called the Crown and Anchor with a really tasty se;ection of resonably priced food and with veryfriendly and welcoming owners.
If you have already booked this holiday I strongly suggest that you try to cancel it as soon as possible, as before the holiday I read reviews on this website detailling the horror and simply thought they were overexagerated lies, but it really is all true. This holiday would only suit someone who enjoys sitting by the pool drinking and smoking all day long, and those who wish to experience no culture whatsoever whilst getting burt to a crisp as many of our fellow holiday makers seemed to relish in.
