eixample area
by call_me_rhia
the area of Barcelona called eixample is a quarter that was built after 1859, when they tore down the city walls. This second Barcelona was carefully planned and structured by Ildefons Cerda i Sunyer and laid out as a grid. It's where most of the wonderful modernist buildings are located: Gaudì's houses (la pedrera, casa batlò), the sagrada familia, parc guell, but also, by other architects, casa amatler, casa de les punxes and the hospital san pau.
Don't ask locals for directions!
by doverox
Catalunyans are really friendly people, but they are horrible at giving directions. Asking a simple question such as, 'can you tell me where Cassanova street is', will merit a long drawn out answer that probably wont lead you to your destination. Go to an information center or consult a map instead.

THE RAMBLAS is Europe meets Spain. It has more in common with the Champs de Elysees than a sreet in Spain to me. Sidewalk cafes, flower vendors, leathergoods, purses, newspapers..its all here..along with sumptious oportunities to 'people watch'...just take up the Spanish habit,,,'Dar un Paseo'...make strolling the Ramblas a daily habit. I can still here the vendadore now...'Loteria,,todos son equales....Loteriiiiia,, todos son...' (its all a pleasant dream;-)
Palau Reial de Pedralbes
by Pieter11
The Palau Reial de Pedralbes used to be a residence of the royal families that stayed in Bercelona. It was built in 1924. The building has a strong southern exterior and a lovely garden around it. The gardens are designed by “Rubió i Tudurí” and the fountain in the front is made by Gaudi.
Since 1990 the palace is a ceramic museum with the largest collection of Spanish pots, from the 11th century up to modern pottery. Art made by Picasso and Miró are the most famous pieces in the museum.
