best neighborhood to stay in with kids

by paembry

Hi, we'll be in Barcelona for 3 nights in February. We will probably rent an apartment but I wondered what the best neighborhood would be with 2 kids (ages 9 and 12). A number of apartments are in Barceloneta - how is that as a place to stay when the beach you're not going to the beach?

Hi,

Barceloneta is fine, as you have noticed it is ideal for the beaches. Its also handy for Port Vell and the Olympic Village / Marina. Barceloneta was the working class area where the fishermen lived so its narrow streets are absolutely stuffed with seafood restaurants. It is not the best location for sightseeing in the rest of the city but it would not be prohibitive. It is not far from El Born and the Gothic Quarter, and Barcelona is a compact city with good relatively cheap public transport, and taxis are not expensive either

El Born is a lovely old area with lots of good bars and restaurants and lots of apartments. It is becoming increasingly touristy but is still a very nice area.

The Gothic Quarter is overwhelmingly touristy now, it is beautiful but it has lots of narrow dark streets and can be very noisy at night.

If you want to experience the Barcelona the locals live in take an apartment in L'Eixample, then you can use locals cafe / bars, restaurants, bakers, greengrocers, and depending on where you are maybe a market

Hi Doff! :-)

I can't really add much to the excellent reply above. Anyway, the city is very compact so you are never very far away.

Barceloneta is great as it's close to both beaches and old town. Going on February you will not use the beach for swimming, but if its' sunny (and we get lots of sunny days here even in winter) it's very nice walking along the seaside, stop in a terrace to have a warm coffee, seeing the people playing sports, flying kites, walking their dogs... there are a few playing areas for kids scattered along the seaside.

I do agree Eixample is better if you want to "live like a local", but be aware that Eixample is huge so some areas are better than others for touristy purposes.

I do have a couple of tips about areas of Barcelona that may you find useful:

La Pedrera was first occupied in 1911, a very important moment in the history of Barcelona, when the city embraced new forms of transport (tram, metro, funicular railway, motor car), cinema, telephone...All of these aspects are presented in the apartment, in which the original elements of Gaudi’s architecture are conserved, and accompanied by furniture, which combine to recreate the look and feel of a typical bourgeois Barcelona home.
At summer nights you can listen to live Music on the roof and and just have cava (our champagne).

by Weener

Locals in Barcelona have their siesta between 1–4pm, and work later on in the evening, finishing about 8pm. Because of the late finish, they eat later (about 10pm) so expect queues for good restaurants at this time. Try to eat earlier to avoid the rush, especially at the weekends.

Barcelona has got a lot of modernist buildings, you can see them all around the city centre, some famous, some not so famous.
