shopping, eating, transportation during Xmas

by mishoq

Hi,

we are going to spend Xmas in Barcelona this year. We will live in apartment (metro station Liceu). Is there any food store opened 24th in the afternoon and also 25th and 26th of December? The same question I have also for restaurants (with reasonable prices). I suppose public transportation works (with some limitation) normally.

Thanks for help,

Michael

Hi,

Lots of useful information on Barcelona at Christmas including what is open and closed, etc here

Please look at the information on my Barcelona page. The city largely shuts down from Christmas until New Years. Christmas is a family holiday - people go home for the holiday and businesses are closed. December 26 is ALSO a holiday, and the shops (including grocery stores) are closed. The streets are practically empty. You need to plan ahead in terms of food and shopping.

Check at your local full-service bakery. We used to have one nearby and they were open on holidays, at least in the mornings. They have an assortment of essentials (higher prices, of course) that you might need in an emergency; things you forgot to stock up on.

Until a few years ago the city tended to 'shut down' on holidays, but nowadays many places open in the city center all year round.

The most touristy shops and the Maremagnum shopping mall (10 min walking from Liceu) open in festive days (including Christmas day).

Regarding food, I guess you're arriving on 24. Then you can stock food and drinks on a supermarket upon arrival. There is a very good supermarket at the basement of El Corte Inglés in Pl. Catalunya (it's not cheap indeed). There is as well a Carrefour in Las Ramblas. Both places will close at 10 pm on Dec 24.

There is an 'Opencor' (24-h convenience store) in Ronda Sant Pere 33 (15-20 min walking from Liceu). As well, for 'emergencies' the many 'minimarkets' run by Asians (many around El Raval) are usually handy as they tend to be open during holidays.

You will have no problems finding open restaurants, only the ones mainly catering to local workers will close. Most of the ones in the city center, Barceloneta, Port Olimpic, etc will be open as usual (and quite busy).

Have a great holiday!

La Pedrera by Gaudi and Passeig de Gràcia.
You must go for a walk around Passeig de Gracia, Rambla Catalunya where you can find a lot of nice buildings from Modernism to visit and a lot of places for shopping.

TIPPING:In restaurants the price shown on the menu has to include any service charge. Only when the menu indicates 'IVA no incluido' (VAT not included) can this be added to the bill. Tips are not compulsory, but tend to be given when you are happy with the service.

Get lost in the gothic quarter

by yelyah99

A seemingly random maze of endless streets will lull you into thinking this is an uninteresting residential part of the great city. But hidden amongst the graffiti and balconies are fantastic shops, great restaurants and beautiful buildings. You just have to know where to look! Either that, or spend days here wandering the streets and taking pictures of the streetlife. You'll be strolling down yet another vaguely downtrodden street, wondering where everybody is and suddenly realise how beautiful the street looks with the sun filtering down through the buildings... and you'll no longer care where everybody is.
It's not hectic like Las Ramblas, but it's more real, more natural and much more rewarding.
