    New hostel

Hostel Gat Raval is one of the newest hostels(well, it was in 2002) near La Rambla. Its a few blocks from La Rambla in a quiet street. Its 50 euro for a double, with shared shower. Its clean and quite popular.

The black, white and green cat of the Raval

Clean and pleasant Hostal with friendly and helpful staff. Each room is cleaned daily, and has a fan, sink, and television; some double rooms have en suite facilities. There is a computer available for internet access in the reception. It was free when I was there.

It's only a few minutes walk from the Ramblas. I felt perfectly safe the whole time walking to and from the hostal, and having been at the Sónar festival I was sometimes walking back at around 5 or 6 in the morning. It's away from the main noise of the Ramblas and there isn't much traffic down the street, though there are a few local bars along the road which can be a little noisy.

If you're going to the Sónar festival, it's perfectly placed for the daytime - it's right next door to MACBA and the CCCB, where the festival's daytime component takes place.

In my view it's a little expensive, at least for single travellers. At 37 euros for a single room it's just over 40 dollars per night for the Americans among you. The double rooms are cheaper per person (as ever). There's no doubting it's a nice place to stay with no real faults and on the accommodation alone I can heartily recommend it; but there are cheaper rooms to be had elsewhere.

Unique Quality: They like green in this place - green doors, green windowframes and shutters, green sheets...

Directions: From the top of the Ramblas, take the 1st right, C/ Tallers, go left down C/ Valldonzella, then go left down C/ Joaquín Costa. Or, take the 2nd right from the Ramblas, C/ Bonsuccés, and walk between CCCB and MACBA (c/ ferlandina). Look for the banner

    New style Hostal

Upstairs in a city street in El Raval, Gat Raval is a non traditional hostal. I saw it described elsewhere as a hostal for hostellers who are now older (30-something?) and want some comforts, and thats as good a description as any. Near MACBA, about 5 minutes walk from Las Ramblas. I had a compact single room with TV and sink for around 30E (though now more). Doubles and ensuite available also. Kept clean and plenty bath/shower/toilet rooms. My room overlooked the internal courtyard, which meant a bit of noise from the childrens nursery downstairs. There was also a small balcony you could sit outside on.

Unique Quality: Brightly painted in green and white - ideal for Celtic fans.

Directions: Nearest metro Universitat. From Ramblas go along C/ Pintor Fortuny and can then cut through past MACBA. I managed to walk past it twice as the doorway is very unassuming - look upwards for the banner.

Place to Stay in Barcelona

by Rorym8980

Hi I am coming to Barcelona June 6th through the 8th for a weekend of sight seeing and relaxing. I am a female traveling by myself and would like to stay somewhere safe, inexpensive, and fun. Can anyone recommend a place to stay for around 30 Euros, near the center?
Thanks for your help!

#18 Carrer de la Boqueria

This pension is very close to the Metro Stop "Liceu" on La Ramblas. You can't get more central than this!!

I've stayed at Hostal Gat Raval a couple of times. There are single rooms with shared bathroom/showers or i think there are doubles with bathroom in them.
Gat Raval is painted white and lime green and is right near MACBA, the contemporary art museum.
i can't find their website, but a search for 'hostal gat raval' will yield a number of sites with info and online reservation options.
Virtual Tourist also has other recommendations in the Barcelona section.
good luck
