The city is famed for its Modernist architecture, almost all of which are innovative masterpieces of Antoni Gaudi, who seemingly used the city as his canvas. Many are extraordinarily crafted; their shapes mimicking nature and hues spanning across a spectrum. The outstanding being the Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia, an exquisite cathedral to which the artist dedicated the last 43 years of his life, but which remains as yet unfinished. The completed art piece will feature 12 bell-towers in the facades dedicated to the 12 apostles, 4 others for the evangelists, a central dome in honor of Jesus Christ and a tower of Virgin Mary. I suggest heading up to the spires, accessible via spiral and shadowy stairways, to have an idea of what the final structure should look like and to simultaneously capture an overview of Barcelona.
His excellent draughtsmanship is also displayed around Passeig de Gracia, the so-called Quadrat d’Or (Golden Square) in the Eixample. Of all, the wave-like Casa Mila is the most outstanding, mainly because of its colorful mosaic outlook and inexplicable balconies. Another area that details his works is Parc Guell, a lovely park which sits on a hill, accessible via steep flights of steps from the Lesseps subway station. By foot, you can ascend to a large pavilion supported by near hundred columns. But it will take quite some time to get to that point. It was surely worth the while to make that journey which comes packaged with superb view of the city and yet more exotic but interesting structures designed by Mr. Gaudi. Amid his artistic works stands the pinkish Casa-Museu Gaudi, a museum dedicated to him which once was his residence.

Palau de la musica is a magnificient building with spectacular mosaics, glasswork and statues. I was very disappointed, that it was closed, so we only could see the outside, which was difficult, considering the narrow street. The columns covered with colorful tiles are so beautiful. What a shame that I couldn't take some closeup pictures!
Flam

Serving Size: 4
3/4 lb white sugar
1 tablespoon cold water
1/2 lemon, juice
1 tablespoon boiling water
5 medium eggs
2 cups milk
1 teaspoon vanilla essence or 1 vanilla pod
Preheat the oven to low, 150°C/300°F. Start by making the caramel sauce: in a heavy-based pot, put 100g of the sugar, with the cold water and lemon juice. Allow to heat very gently until the sugar caramelises (shake the pot occasionally for this to happen evenly) and turns a deep golden colour. Do not allow this to boil. Take off the heat and stir in the boiling water, carefully. Put the pot back on the heat to dissolve the caramel in the water.
Now pour this sauce into the base of either 1 large serving dish, or 4 individual ramekin dishes or moulds. Now make the custard by whisking the eggs and remaining sugar together. Heat the milk and vanilla pod until very hot, but not boiling, then let it sit for about 10 minutes. Take out the pod. Now, beat the milk into the egg mixture (add the vanilla essence if you did not use a pod).
Pour the egg mix into the serving dish(es) and place carefully in an ovenproof dish. Pour hot water into this dish to come half way up the sides of the serving dish(es), and cook for about an hour or until set. To serve, let the custards cool, run a knife around the edge of the dish and then invert onto a serving plate. This can be served with thick cream.
Ancient Roman Walls
by dlytle
To see some of the Roman remains in Barcelona you should visit the area near the Cathedral. Several sections of the northeastern walls of Roman Barcino are still standing near the cathedral.
Carrer Tapineria, which runs from Placa de l'Angel (to your right with your back facing Via Laietana) to Placa Ramon Berenguer, does double duty as a parking space for motorcycles and as a viewing space from which you can see a large stretch of a 4th-century defense wall under the Palau Reial Major.
Continuing along C. Tapineria and making a left onto Av. de la Catedral lands you in Placa Seu (in front of the Cathedral), where you can see the only intact octagonal corner tower left today, part of the Museu Diocesa.
To the right of the cathedral are several more Roman towers and a reconstruction of one of the two aqueducts that ran through here to supply water to Barcino.
