Barcelona vs. Madrid

by kornhill

We have one week to split between the two cities. What are your recommendations? Should we spend more time in Madrid or Barcelona? Our flight flies into Madrid. We then plan to take the AVE from Madrid to Barcelona. Just wondering which city is more worthwhile and has more things to do.

Def Barcelona. If the weather is great, you have the benefit of going to the beach.

I would split the time evenly. If your return flight is from Madrid, I agree to go to Barcelona first.

I don't find heat a consideration. Barcelona can be extremely hot and so can Madrid, but both have nice walks and places covered with trees or that have a good breeze.

Good to do would be to look thru the VT pages, pick out a few things you want to see in each place, and plan accordingly. In other words, set you expectations for what you want to see so you won't be disappointed you won't have time. Also make a list of things to add if you have time left over.

Both cities also have great day trips ... so you have one good problem, as both places are wonderful.

I am from Madrid, and I consider that it's a problem of feeling. It also depnds on what you are interesyed in: For museums, Madrid; for buildings, Barcelona.

Heat: Madrid is much hotter than Barcelona, but Barclona is too humid, so, for me, I prefer Madrid in this case. And yes, Barcelona has becah.

I have read always the same question, have a look at the pages (there are hundred of tips/pics, and think about what your feeling says.

Madrid would be a goos place but you atleast need 3-4 days to explore Barcelona.

as others said, there is more a question of feelings and personal tastes.

No one can tell you "which city is more worthwhile and has more things to do" because what I do like doing maybe not what YOU like doing.

Short question requires a short answer: Barcelona.

Travel Tips for Barcelona

very expensive

by quartinb

by now everybody knows that BCN is the prettiest and biggest spanish town with million attractions. all that has a cost. buying and eating turns out to be very expensive experience. not to fancy about spanish cuisine this is the most negative feature on my two days trip to Barcelona. thou' the best way to deal with that is: hang on to fast food.
if yu can afford it just venture yurself on those hundreds restaurants along the ramblas and enjoy.

Menus in Restaurants

by Susanna1975

Almost all the menus are in Catalunian so Spanish does not necessary help you in order to find out what there is in your tapas... Take some Catalunian dictionary with you before going to a restaurant if you want to know what you are eating :-)

Stuff for a weekend trip

by fairy_dust

Since we only spent a weekend there, we didn't need to bring much. I just had my backpack, a money belt and small purse, and a messenger bag Summer clothes and a bathing suit, and comfortable shoes (I wore my black platform slides). I also brought a pair of plastic flip-flops. Your own prescriptions, and any toiletries you normally use. Our hotel provided soap and shampoo, but what is provided depends on the hotel/hostel you stay at. Your own camera and film. If you run out, you can probably buy some from a store. Swimsuit for the beach, and sunscreen if you're going to be outside a lot.

Don't miss this street, you...

by l_joo

Don't miss this street, you can see something there belongs to Barcelona. This is a quiet street, cute terrace houses, you can see women cooking at the back of their house, kids running around, that's my kind of place.
