Avoid annexes!
I have learned that "annexes" to hotels in Europe ususlly means an adjacent or nearby building they have purchased but not yet renovated. We were put in the annex to this hotel. First we had to climb about 90 steps with all our luggage. The rooom was actually a 2 room former apartment and was clean enough but totally lacking in charm.
Unique Quality: The location was good, just off the Ramblas and the bathroom & wc were clean, but they were both the tiniest I have encountered.

Our one-bedroom apartment was 11,500 ptas per night (approximately $60) plus tax. Prices are listed on the website.
Unique Quality: We stayed in an apartment on the top floor (5 floor walkup), whic was clean and large. They also have reasonably priced single and double rooms.

Barcelona - Hostal Opera, Hosteria Grau
Hello: Since Barcelona is my first stop in a month long Spain/Portgual trip, I have been stressing over my hotel room. Has anyone stayed at Hostal Opera or Hosteria Grau? Hosteria Grau does not have air conditioning, and I think August is too hot for just fans. Hostal Opera - I have heard good and bad opinons about this Hostal. I can pay more for a room - up to 85 euros (but don't want too). Does anyone have any opinions as to good, comfortable, clean, quaint, and close to Las Ramblas, single room for three nights? I'm starting to look toward the more modern places, but they are around $100 and up. Thanks, kathleen
