Barrio Gotico - Barcelona
The medieval part of Barcelona: A maze of alleys that date back to the time of the Aragon kings. The main sights are the historic cathedral (not the "Sagrada Familia" by Gaudi!) and the Townhouse, the "ajuntamiento".

Barcelona's oldest residential district is a maze of narrow streets that house some fantastic examples of Gothic architecture. Lots of trendy young designers have opened up outlets here over the last few years along with some classy restaurants and tapas bars that fill up with the city's youth most nights. Along with the Gothic buildings, you can see the most concentrated remains of the Roman period here, between Placa de la Catedral and Placa Sant Jaume.
Such a great small bar! We stumbled upon it on friday night. For Eu5 each we had a pass and free drink. the music was fantastic, people were relaxed and chatty and it proved to be a very nice experience. My man and I had a blast dancing around to Jazz and Soul. I highly recommend this place. would def go here again! Casual

Is anyone familiar with, and have opinions about, Hotel Gotico in Barcelona? It would be a one night stay, prior to a cruise departure the next day.
Also, what attractions would be recommended in that immediate area - for that afternoon and evening.
Travel is in September, 2009.
I'm not familiar with the hotel, however I did depart from Barcelona on a cruise a few years back. I highly recommend visiting the Sangrada familia(amazing unfinished church by Guadi). There is also a hop on/hop off bus that allows you to see many of the major attractions in just a little bit of time. We stayed on Las Ramblas and enjoyed the evening before departure indulging in spanish food and sangria.
LOL
Sangrada Familia = Bleed Family
Sagrada Familia = Holy Family
sorry I could not resist.... I know is so easy to ispell a foreign name, but this mistake was too funny! please do not take offense
jpl3: it will help if you say where the hotel is. If in the Gothic Quarter (given its name) you will be in the very touristy center and walking distance of many attractions, and a short metro/bus/taxi ride from others. But I'm just guessing!
for dinner... much better avoid Las Ramblas. You may have a good meal and drinks, but you will pay twice or more, or just will get bad food. Las Ramblas is nowadays he mother of all tourist traps and you will find very few locals there. Besides is not the best place to be at night.
If you want to buy specialized books you can go to the center of the city, where some big book shops are located. In particular, Catalonia bookstore is a good place to choose (in front of Corte Ingles). By the way, El Corte Ingles is not a very recommended place to buy, it's very expensive.
You can try in another famous and big bookstore: "Abacus" located at Ausias March street.
