A visit to the Vall de Boi is a wonderful excursion from Barcelona. Although it can be done in a long day, 2 or 3 days is better if you have the time. The valley is on the west side of the National Park of Aiguestortes and Estany of Sant Maurici. In the valley are several small towns linked by hiking trails. You can explore wonderful 12th century churches and see evidence of the Romans who settled the valley in the first century. In the summertime there are many concerts dances, and other festive events.A 19th century spa offers luxury accommodation, but I prefer the Hostal Pascual, a centrally located family-run pension which provides nice rooms in a woodsy setting with excellent meals and very reasonable prices.
You can take a taxi into the national park and spend the day walking the trails from easy strolls to challenging hikes, and spend a night in a mountain refuge if you choose.
Vall de boi is a charming place which offers something for every taste.My fondest memory of Barcelona is spending at night in the Parador de Cardona, located a short drive outside of Barcelona. It is a 9th century castle on a hilltop converted into a luxury hotel. The rates are very reasonable for the chance to live and dine like a king.
