Barcelona Accomodations

by scallens

We will be in Barcelona at the end of a three week trip in Spain and France In October. I have been looking at these four hotels and was wondering if some of you might offer your opinions about them. We are two couples in our 60's who have traveled a lot in Europe. Not looking for fancy, but nice rooms with ensuite bathrooms. The hotels are Hostal Goya, Hotel Gaudi, Banys Orientals, and Meson Castilla. Only the Goya has replied to my inquiry about the availability of rooms for my dates. I have been unable to contact the Hotel d'Uxelles, in which we are also interested. The email will not go through. Any suggestions on how to get these places to respond? Thanks a bunch

I think it's a little too early to panic about finding hotel rooms for 7 months from now. I'd wait until next August. The Goya Hostal area is fine; I would not consider staying at any of the other hotels. I'd never stay on or near the Ramblas or any where in the "old town". Safety first.

There are many nice areas in Barcelona where you can find good accommodation. I would suggest to read this article about accommodation in Barcelona http://hubpages.com/hub/Non-touristy-attractions-in-Barcelona

I can only speak location-wise (being a Barcelona's resident, never used any hotel), but I don't see safety issues with any of these locations, except (maybe) the Gaudi (and still is not so bad). The only areas I would be concerned in the old town are near the sea end of las Ramblas. In any other areas there is risk of pickpockets anywhere, probably more in areas you feel safer so you let your guard down (but it's very easy to prevent not having anything easy to pick)

Probably the Goya is in the best location, but as well the Banys Orientals (and this hotel looks amazing). Never heard about Meson Castilla before but I'd check its location on Google maps and the area is OK, with nice trendy shops and restaurants nearby.

No idea on "to get these places to respond" apart of checking every website so you are using the right email addresses, or phone them. Anyway, as said above, is very early for booking. Hotel d'Uxelles seems to have a booking form on its website, did you tried this?

We used the Hispania-Suiza for two couples it has apartments with two bedrooms lounge/diningroom/kichenette and bathroom. Restaurant has some vintage cars on display after which the hotel is named. It's just round the corner from the Gaudi Cathedral.

I would just call them up. I found most hotel workers in Barcelona speak English when Ive called- just remember the time difference to be sure not to get someone thats not really in-the-know at 3am..

I often suggest the Banys Orientals. They have a restaurant (actually, quite a famous restaurant) and the location is excellent...being just around the corner from the Picasso Museum and the Metro station. It is also walkable to the Port area and the entire Bario Gottico (medieval centre). I'd suggest contacting them again and if all else fails perhaps calling them (yes, they speak English). This hotel operates at close to 100% occupancy so it's never too early to book here.

Check out the sites. You should check other VT pages for tips, but one of the obvious sites to visit is the
Sagrada Familiar (by Antonin Gaudi). This is me thinking (this is all great fun, but for christ sake lets go and have a beer !).

take a rest in Ciutadella Park - a haven of peace within the city, with its flower beds, lily ponds, waterfalls, fountains, lakes, bandstands and monuments. The photo is of the waterfall in the park.

for some bizarre reason, barcelona, one of the coolest cities in the world always finds itself looking to london for approval. as a result people speaking english are very well treated in barcelona, by the young at any rate. people will give you a chance and listen to when you speak english, even if they're trying to chuck you out!
barcelonans are catalan people not spanish, remember that, not that they'll let u forget!

Barcelona Harbour

by Meadows11

Walking along the Barcelona harbour offers a very pleasant stroll, and although not exactly deserted, it does offer an opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Barcelona is an incredibly dense and vast city, and occasionally it is nice to get to somewhere like this and relax a little. A beautiful spot.
