Central to all things Touristy
The hotel itself is old, worn out and in desperate need of refurbishing/upgrade. The room was kind of tight. The bed is old, carpets and walls stained, bathroom has caked-in black gunk in corners, bed cover is drab and dirty-looking. Towels are large but far from being plush. They did have complimentary toiletries, cheap quality they may be. Additionally, the rumblings of the metro can be felt/heard in the room. Breakfast was simple--coffee, orange juice, fresh sliced pineapple, honeydew melon and watermelon, croissants, sandwiches and cold scalloped potato, that is more dense that what I'm used to.
But the AC worked, the front desk ladies and the barmaid friendly and helpful and it is centrally located! There is a safe in the room, TV with four channels to choose from, free internet access on the first floor (granted there was only one computer, but it was always availbale when I needed it. Metro access is only a few feet away from hotel entrance. There is also a restaurant and bar/lounge in the hotel.

Great suggestion by VTers
For the hotel tip, special thanks to both ramot418 and to oriettaIT for their suggesting the Hotel Urquinaona. It was a marvelous experience.
Hotel is located 5 minutes easy strolling distance from Plaça Catalunya. Metro Line no. 1 on the corner - but easier to walk from Plaça Catalunya because of large number of steps up from the Metro. Good for going not for returning.
Excellent security. Lift.
Free internet (see - I´m writing this while still here) in the lounge on the first floor. Also free coffee in lounge and nice couches.
Room is large, airconditioned and clean. Bed is firm and comfortable. Seems like it is new, along with the toilet, sink and shower. Tiles not. Pillow very uncomfortable, hard and flat.
Fridge, telephone, safe, TV in room. Very good lighting. Excellent shower, plenty of good hot water. Plenty of hangers provided.
My window is on a small dark inner courtyard - better to keep the curtain closed. There are other rooms with a balcony over the street.
Pleasant, helpful desk staff. Continental breakfast included - cereals, croissant, fresh squeezed juice, jams, butter, coffee/tea, served in the adjoining restaurant (same management?). Need to ask to get the croissant heated.
Nice and quiet after 2200 (10 pm) by request of staff.
Unique Quality: Location is excellent for getting to any of the sites either by Metro or on foot. Buses too very convenient.
Remember that it is a 2 star only - with that it is among the better 2 star hotels I have stayed at previously.
Best of all for me is the free coffee in the lounge - not instant - COFFEE! In a coffee machine that grinds the beans on the spot and makes espresso.
One of the attractions is definitely the staff. Very helpful and with a smile. The room is cleaned daily, clean sheets and towels every 2 days.

Excellent budget hotel
When my wife and I travel abroad, we do not like to "invest" in fancy, big hotels as we use them as no more than a place to sleep. Therefore the size of the room is irrelevant to us. What is important, of course, is that everything works properly and it's clean. Also, for us personally, there are 3 important things we like to have in a hotel room: A room safe, a telephone and a fridge - all of which were in our hotel room. Also in our room was a TV (local Spanish stations only), an excellent private bathroom/shower and air-conditioning (which we didn't need or use as we were there in March 2009). As our room faced the street, it had a small "balcony" as well - just something you can walk out on with no room for even a small chair. The room was small (although we've been in smaller ones) but definitely adequate, with an additional single bed, which was very convenient for our luggage. :) And, of course, everything was very clean and was cleaned daily during our stay.
It is a small hotel with about 15 rooms, over a small cafe, which serves the continental breakfasts included in the price. The reception area, on the street level, is very small (our room was much larger!) and it has one small elevator. The "lobby" - about the size of our room - is on the first floor up, together with a sofa or two, a computer with Internet access (free use for guests) and a coffee machine - also free use for guests, but was out of order half the time we were there. There is WiFi wireless Internet access throughout the hotel for all guests.
The staff was very friendly and helpful. For example, breakfast is served starting 8:00am. However, a couple of mornings we had to leave before that hour. As the cafe serving the breakfast is open from about 7:15-7:30am, they packed our sandwich and croissant for us, ready to take with us upon leaving the hotel for a day of touring.
Unique Quality: Very centrally located.

Hotel Urquinaona
Nice and clean hotel, very well located near Placa Catalunya, just ten steps (I counted them) far from the underground station. Well connected, both by day and by night, with buses.
Rooms are small but equipped with everything you need, private bathroom, hair dryer, air conditioning, free safebox, television and a small refrigerator. You will find also a bottle of Cava wine waiting for you included in the rate.
Breakfast is included and served at the bar next door. It was adeguate for a good start of the day: coffee, juice, a couple of small sandwich with prosciutto and cheese, croissant.
I stayed ten days and everything satisfied my expectations.
There are often special offers in summer and Christmas, check their site.

Great hotel
Very good one star hotel. Good breakfast that lasted until 11:30. Nice, clean rooms. Superb location. Very good value compared to most other options in Barcelona. Internet access. Fridge in room. Complimentary bottle of champagne on arrival. I got no complaints at all.
