Bullfighting

by scallens

We will be in Barcelona in early October. Do they still have bullfights there at this time of year? I assume, if they do, that they would be on the weekends. Would advanced tickets need to be purchased, or we will be able to purchase them at the gate?

Hi, I live in Barcelona. And I've no idea of when there are bullfights in town. This is not something a 'local' usually does. Most people here actually don't like bullfights and hope these barbaric events are banned soon. Please read this tip from VT member Peret, is the best description I ever seen about the 'experience' you'll have in case you go:

One of the bullrings in Barcelona is being converted to a shopping mall. The other one, after nearly facing bankruptcy a few years ago, is still functioning, largely due the tourists go there (it only gets full of 'aficionados' when a top matador performs in town) and the other events the place is used for. You get the picture?

Of course is your time and money, but IMHO there are a zillion better things to do in Barcelona than watching a beautiful animal tortured to death, surrounded by fellow tourists, some of them leaving the place in tears or vomiting...

However, if you really want to see a bullfight, better do it in places where local people like them so you can at least enjoy the atmosphere.

Hi, in october most probably there will not be any bullfights any more in Barcelona this year. I have understood that this year bullfight season will be over for the 26th of July. There will be this year at least nine bullfights with top bullfighters, and it is 18th of July when José Tomas, with enormous popularity in Barcelona, will be acting with El Fundi and Manzanares. All of the bullfights are worth seeing if you are interested in bullfights, just mentioned José Tomas due to his ever growing popularity in Barcelona. Barcelona Bullring is one of the beauties among spanish bullrings too due to the very curious (allmost) modernist design combining byzantine and neomudéjar styles. A true jewell among Spanish bullrings.

Barcelona Bullring houses a bullfighting museum too and museo taurino de Barcelona is the name.

Sorry, didn´t mention that tickets can be bought as general rule at the gate for most of the bullfights. There is a ticket office in every bullring opening usually the same morning as the bullfight is held and later after the mealtime couple of hours before the bullfight. Only thing is that maybe for bullfight where there is José Tomas acting tickets might be sold out well in advance.

Yep, the season is over by September. Here is my tip on the barcelona bull fighting. I did see the legendary El Cordobes in Barcelona, way back in the day. I do agree though, the locals are fast giving it up. There are still some elderly locals that do still long for the old days. The rest are tourists.

Travel Tips for Barcelona

MNAC -- Don't Miss It!

by miquelc

The Museu Nacional de l'Arte de Catalunya (MNAC) is located on Montjuic just uphill from the Fira de Barcelona. It can be reached conveniently by several modes of public transportation, including the Bus Turistic.

This museum could take days to see properly, since it encompasses most of the art history of Catalunya. If you have time to see only one section, the Romanesque art display is spectacular. It contains many of the actual mosaics removed from remote Romanesque churches in more rural parts of Catalunya, including S. Climent de Taull. The colorful art gives the lie to the phrase "Dark Ages". Barcelona is full of things to love. Besides the MNAC, there is the spectacular Museu Maritim in the old Drassanes where ships were built for the navy of the kings of Aragon. There is the art and architecture of the Modernists, Domenech i Montaner, Gaudi, and others. There are the wonderful Gothic buildings of the Barri Gotic. And there are the people. The staff at the Hotel Colors in the Horta district were especially kind and helpful to me. I recommend them for a pleasant stay in a modern hotel away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Barcelona Tip

one funny thing was during my first visit to barcelona myself and my mate other donal were walking up las ramblas and we saw this woman fighting with her husband. to show her disgust with him for whatever he had done she did an impromtu strip and danced gleefully for the assembled crowd!

Catalunya

by b1bob

Catalunya is the state Barcelona is in. Despite the repression during the 36-year Franco regime of all local dialects and cultures, Catalán as a language made a come back on the dictator's timely death and the Catalán flags started flying again.

Arc de Triomf

To the east from Barri Gotico there is Parc de la Ciutadella. In 1889 the World's Exibition took place here. To its opening the Triumphal arch have deen constructed at the entrance into the park. It is decorated by sculptural allegorical bas-reliefs.

Tibidabo mountain. Take a trilling ride with a mountain train to the top. There you will find an amusement park, cathedral and television tower (Torre de collserola). Views above the clouds (500m above sea level) are amazing!
