Hotel Arc La Rambla: Seems Like The Obvious Choice
I thought searching for a hotel in Rome was a tough decision but this was even much more difficult. There are gazillions of hotels in Barcelona! So, narrowing down my search was we need a king size bed for my tall boyfriend. We wanted breakfast included with our stay. It works out that this is always an excellent deal. Free Wifi is also important. Location, location, location. Thank goodness for Google Maps street view. This hotel appears to be located in a great place. Price is important. I wish we could afford to stay in luxurious accommodations but I haven't won the lottery yet. So, this was more in line with what we could afford. Close to a metro station, so we are not walking forever. Reviews - decent reviews were found for this hotel. Not on a super busy street. Sometimes, traffic noise makes it difficult to sleep. I hope I made a good choice. I'm looking forward to staying here.

OK Apartment Barcelona - Sant Pau: Cosy apartment close to the Ramblas
In Barcelona it's difficult to find an affordable accommodation close to the Ramblas, which is absolutely the place to stay. We found this apartment in a side street of the Ramblas and it was a pleasure to stay there. To walk to the Ramblas was about 5 minutes.
The apartment was fully equipped, with all the needs we had. Kitchen, nice bathroom, etc. When we arrived we were welcomed personally by the owner.

Raval Sector: Apartment in Raval District
It was damp and cool all the time because even though it was at ground level, no sun ever penetrated the apartment. The freezer of the refrigerator was frozen up with ice fully. The stove barely worked being old and electric. The price, though was $75 which is cheap for the area and the city. Everything is expensive and a more reasonable location would have run around $120-180 a night. So we chose low end.
There was nothing special about the stay in the apartment, other than the mold got to my sinus.

University housing for budget accomodations: University housing for budget accomodations
Another option for budget accomodation is staying in rooms at university housing during the summer months when the university is not in session!
Prices based on by room (not per person) per night.
Searching the site for Barcelona, there are several options that's close and doable using the Metro for a few stops to get to city center / Catalunya / Las Ramblas areas.

SILVER APARTHOTEL: Good Accommodation
I chose this Hotel as it was reasonably priced for Barcelona, plus, the reviews were quite good.
Well, it didn’t let me down.
We caught a Taxi from Placa deCatalunya , the fare was only 9 euros in 2011.
It is located in a side street in the Gracia district, near “Casa Vicens.”
The Hotel is security conscious with the only way into the Hotel by the front door which only opens when the Receptionist can see who the guest is.
All of the people behind the counter could speak English, and were very helpful. My husband needed some medication and they were kind enough to write it down in Spanish for him to hand to the Pharmacist.
Our ‘comfort ‘room was located on the 5th floor, and this was reached by either of the two small lifts. It was a large room with a large modern Television, also an area with a sink, crockery, Microwave and Fridge, this we liked very much!
Bathroom had the shower over the bath and a good supply of hot water. Soap, shampoo & skin care were supplied.
We had a large window which overlooked the courtyard where breakfast was served [not included in the price, available for extra 8 euros] and also to flats. The area was very quiet and we enjoyed good sleeps for our 3 nights.
It may not be in the centre, but the location was excellent for us. Fontana metro is a 5min walk away, and a very quick way to get to the city centre, Sagrada Familia Cathedral and Park Guell.
They also have a car park in the same building.
We enjoyed our stay, and would recommend this Hotel on our experience here.
Great having a Kichenette.

Apartment renting in Barcelona
Rented this apartment from this site for my stay in Barcelona, it was wonderful. All that for less than 100Euro. But that was back in 2007. However, think now it's no longer renting out but still use vrbo even in New York.
There was a small cafe downstairs called Mora and also a small deli downstairs where I bought fruits (including custard apple) to eat back at the apartment. The apartment was way too big for a couple but that's never a bad thing.
Your own private space, kitchen, laundry etc..

Hotel Constanza: Hotel Constanza
I arrived at 10 am and they did their best to clean the room so that I could check-in half an hour later.
I stayed in October 2013 in this hotel for the 4th time and I would go back again.
It is not necessary to take breakfast at the hotel. In the same place is the restaurant/cafeteria Bruc33, where you will get a really good cafe con leche with a bocadillo for 2.80 Euro (2€ for a half bocadillo).
Clean, modern, within walking distance to Plaça de Catalunya, La Rambla, Universitat, Barri Gotic.

Hotel Aneto: good budget accommodation in city centre
sorry- this may be a bit late for you but - have just recently stayed at the hotel Aneto which is in the Raval area. has had a make-over and is a decent area to stay in - and just off Las aramblas. I'm a senior solo traveller and didn't feel in any way threatned during my stay. Loved it. Hotel is no-frills, but clean with very comfy beds air conditioning/heating and in the morning free coffee and fresh pastries are available in th hallway. at the end of thr corridor small seating area available to enjoy eats which I only found out on last day of visit!
Although I did experience a bit of noise whilst there the manager assured mr that a call to the (24 hour) reception would see to the problem. Have had a look at the double rooms/en suite and they are very satisfactory.
I'm booking for yet another stay there.
btw - there are in the vicinity inexpensive coffee places/tapas bars with VERY good ones just before hitting n the Rambas. Info on request.
just a good no-frills hotel in the city-centre for those who want a low-key holiday with the prospects of meeting some locals if venturing into eating places nearby
