Good hotel not too far from activities
by kimkko
The NH Podium is a nice hotel near the Arc de Triomf. It is comfortable with a pool on the roof. It is quite, very clean, and nothing exceptional. The metro is not too far and I feel the neighborhood is pretty safe. The area has many wholesale clothing shops in the area so you have to walk a ways to do any real shopping. Bus and metro lines are easy to access in Barcelona. The 41 bus in near and so it the L4 and L1 metro lines. The is a very small bar in the lobby. The breakfast buffet is pretty standard.
Directions: Arc de Triomf

GREAT Hotel! It's near everything, it's clean, reasonable, and the staff are great! The hotel has a restaurant, bar, pool on the rooftop, and a terrace. The rooms are really clean which if you have read my review from Lloret de Mar......you can appreciate a clean, safe place to stay!!!

Having great trouble choosing where to stay
by Billy2Bear
I have the chance of accommodation either in Eixample near the Arc de Triomf
or at Sants near the station and place espanya. The sants one is a lovely apartment which I realise is quite far away from the centre but a nice quiet location somewhat appeals as we have kids. The Eixample one is a hotel and cheaper, and closer to the centre (nh podium) but I have read that the area around here can be a bit iffy. Can anyone please recommend our best option? Many thanks.

Both locations are good. No idea why someone would say the area near Arc de Triomf "can be a bit iffy". If this area is iffy, most of the city is iffy too!! ;-))
Sants is not really so far away from the centre. It's just 30-40 min walking (or a few minutes metro ride) to Pg de Gracia, Pl. Catalunya... and you are near Montjuic (Magic fountain, etc.) The area is great, quiet but not dead, as it's full of shops, restaurants, etc.

Many thanks. I still don't know where to choose, but for good reasons :)

none of it is "iffy" and Sants I always consider central. It's right by the Montjuic fountains!
Eixample is near some sights, of course, but all three are. And, Eixample can be very loud with traffic, as it is a grid.
One advantage of Arc de Triomf is the proximity to La Ribera and Born. So, you can walk into the northern part of this neighborhood which is charming but not as touristy as other areas of the old city.
They are all good locations, guess it depends more on the hotel.
