Bargain price, great location!

The Rey Don Jaime I is ideally located, literally only 1 minute from the metro and within 5 minutes walk from the Ramblas, Barri Gotic, the town hall square, cathedral and many of the other main tourist sights. It's on a street that's busy enough to make you feel safe walking back there on a night, but quiet enough to let you get a good night's sleep. The rooms are basic en-suites but immaculately clean, although the beds aren't the best ever. There is 24 hour reception, and the staff are helpful. There are several floors, but there's a lift so that's not a problem! Most rooms at the back have a small balcony looking onto a small street (C/ Llibreteria, if I remember correctly?) - if you leave the balcony doors open at night you can hear the florists etc opening their ships in a morning, but I didn't find that a problem at all. The hotel is also a safe walking distance from bars, pubs and the night bus.

Unique Quality: Fabulous location, especially for the money.

Well located no air con or fan!

It was an OK stay, the hotel is definitely well located by being a couple of blocks from las ramblas. decent room for 3 people but BEWARE of going there in the summer as there is no air con or fan in the rooms. and prefer rooms at the back of the hotel as they don´t face the (killer) afternoon sun.

Unique Quality: - location location location (las ramblas at stone´s throw)
- 5 seconds from the metro Jaume I.

Rey Don Jaime I

This lovely hotel was inexpensive to stay in and is situated next to Las Ramblas. The rooms are clean, big and airy and the staff at the hotel was most helpful.

Legionella

by scoobiedoowhereRU

"Barcelona cover-up"

Legionnaire's disease is caused by the legionella bacterium. Air conditioning systems are breeding grounds for the bacterium (others include grubby showers, cooling towers, and humidifiers).

Barcelona has had several outbreaks - lack of official inspection and poor upkeep of air conditioning plants are the main culprits.

On 28/9/2000 NRC Handelsblad, a Dutch newspaper, published a list of European hotels where at least 2 cases of legionella were found during the previous 5 years. The Information was provided by the Dutch Ministry of Public Health, Welfare and Sport [Ministerie van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport.]

It is reckoned that 12,000 European tourists were infected with legionella in the 5 years up to 2000 (most of the cases in Southern Europe), with some 240 tourist deaths a year.

The list below is from an updated (27/8/2001) NRC Handelsblad report (see web site below). Hotels marked in red are in Catalonia. Check current status (local tourist board are unlikely to help).

Where are located these hotels in Barcelona?
I never heard about them. I know Hotel Rey Don Jaime in Castelldefels (15 km from BCN), it is very nice, up in the hill, with views to the sea and I think it has been recently renovated.

No, I don't know them.
I recommend the hostels "Gat Accommodation", they are cheap, very new and fashion, and also good located, very near to Las Ramblas:
www.gataccommodation.com

Double room with bathroom is 71 €
Single room without bathtub in room 39 €
Double room without bathtub in room 60,10 €
