green parrots in the sky
my first impression were the green parrots flying around the beach and the area around the ZOO and Sagrada Familia! watch in the plam trees and don't miss the green flocks of beautiful parrots in the city!
instead of pigeons and sparrows Barcelona has exotic birds :)
I definitely recommend getting...
I definitely recommend getting a one or two day pass on a tourist bus. You are able to travel to ALL parts of city throughout the day and never have to deal with the metro or taxis...it will definitely save you money and time in the end. Not to mention you'll get the highlights of the city described to you in one of five languages. =) Here's a picture of Casa Mila...the tourist bus will let you off right in front!
The language question
Probabily you knows: there's two official languages in Barcelona. But, what that means for a traveler? I'll try to explain, beyond the officiality. We can say, the 60% of people who lives in Catalonia speak usually catalan. For them, spanish is the second language. Except for old people in the little vilages, everybody can speak spanish. There's a 40% of people, normally descending of spanish people of another places of spain, who spanish is the first language. But except old people in the outer parts of Barcelona, all they understand and live with catalan.
This is a simplicity to guide. For exemple, i'm descending of people of Spain, my mother-tongue is spanish, but my language that i use usually and identified me is catalan. All combinations are possible. What you can do? Speak you spanish without problem, everybody will talk with you, but if you want to wine the heart of most of catalan, say a few words of catalan, althoug this won't always work.
swimming at barceloneta
If you are in barcelona you don't even have to leave the city to go swimming. Down by the old port there is a nice-ish and extremely long sandy beach where you can go swimming and windsurfing. Someone told me that some beaches are frequented by gays, and other are reserved for nude bathing and sunbathing - so you're better ask someone which beach to go to. Sidenote: at the end of october (2002) there were still people swimming swimsuit(optional), sunscreen and towel. There are, in some places, changing cabins
Thanks to the good...
Thanks to the good communications by means of car and bus, we can enjoy a day of sun and beach taking Eix Transversal in the direction of Girona- Costa Brava. In Costa Brava we can have a good time with probably the greatest concentration of charms and experiences in the least space.
In Costa Brava, we can go for a walk, make an excursion on foot or by cycle, by car or even riding a horse, following different paths, going round the edge of coves or even flying up in the sky. We can practise nautical sports (swimming, sailing, water-skiing, windsurfing, kayak, snorkelling, scuba-diving...). There are big leisure centres in Empuriabrava, l'Estartit, Lloret de Mar, Platja d'Aro... And we cannot forget the coves of Costa Brava, little beaches sheltered by forests and cliffs of the mountain, caressed by the shinning and foaming blue of the sea. Their waters are clean, crystal-clear and free of pollution, a destination that grants the environmental quality of the water and the sand of the beaches.
The gastronomy of Costa Brava is a mixture of sea and mountain cooking, the sublime meeting of the sea fruits with the meat and the vegetables of the mountain and the inner plains: 'suquet' of fish (a delicious casserole of white fish and potatoes poached in white wine), cuttlefish with peas, chicken with small lobsters, meatballs with prawns or paella.
We recommend you to visit the Natural Park of Cap de Creus, which has a scenery that suggests how the Earth looked like in its origins, or the swamps of l'Empordà, the Medes Islands (in l'Estartit) and the coves of Begur and Palafrugell, the citadel of Roses, the Greek and Roman ruins of Empúries (in l'Escala) or the medieval villages of Pals and Peratallada, the Iberian remains of Ullastret, the Ancient Village of Tossa de Mar and the beautiful botanical gardens of Blanes and Lloret de Mar.
