Anyone know of a cheap hotel in Figueres or Roses?
Which town do you prefer? Where are you trying to go? There are several places in either.
Iwant to visit both and/or stay in either
Why Roses? Have you been to the area before? I only ask becasue I have spent three summers in the northern Costa Brava (Cadaques and Llanca)and made a side-trip to Roses and did not care much for it. For my tastes it was too built-up and modern and lacked a soul. If you have already been to Cadaques then... otherwise I can suggest Hotel Rocamar, Hotel Llane Petit, Hotel Octavia in Cadaques proper or Hotel Calina in Port Lligat. For Roses you can visit this site: http://www.rosesnet.com/roses/guiaing/alohoteles.htm however I cannot comment on the hotels there. The only restaurant that is of interest is El Bulli of course and if you decide on Cadaques I can suggest quite a few.
For Figueres- I rentet a home close enought to drive there and visit but living in NYC, I prefer not to stay in the city whilst on holiday. I'll do some research and revert.

I've booked a couple of nights now at the 'Prestige Marysol' for Janaury now.
The reason I wanted to stay in Roses was to suss out a possible beachy holiday for the summer maybe and also stay near to Figueres where i could visit Dali's bithplace. Then i'm goin on to the mountains. I'll let you know how i get on if you like.

This is a pic near the museum exit, that's where you find yourself after wandering thru a mase of rooms and corridors....
But to tell you the truth - after visitng this museum my passion for Dali vanished as if never existed, probably it was too much of maddness and crazyness for me... the museum is interesting but very weird at the same time, cracks you brains at some point :)))
Visit Magre street and Placa de la Llana. This is one of the oldest parts of the city and is the former Jewish quarter. The Jews arrived in the city in the second half of the 13th century, following a call for them to do so from Crown Prince Peter, in accordance with which any Jews setting up in the city would be exempt for five years from the payment of taxes and would be given a grant of small plots of land free of charge in which to cultivate food. Thus was formed the Jewish quarter, which had a butcher and bakeries of its own. At night the district would be closed off in order to prevent disturbances. The quarter thus remained in marked isolation from the rest of the city, to the point that the houses which faced on to the church had no doors or windows.
This is museum of very famous artist Salvador Dali. It is in Figueras a city which is not so far from Barcelona. I think, only 2 hours drive with a bus. If you could go to see this museum - use that. Everything is odd build, pictures, atmosphere...
The entry in May 2003. was only 3, 90 euros. This museum was built 1374, on the site of old theatre of Figueras. You can find his deeds from his earliest years to the last years of his life (1904.-1989.)
Antoni Pixtot is the director of the museum and was a friend and collaborator of Salvador Dali. The four monsters in the interior courtyard were a collaboration of theirs. I loved this Artist's work! In the museum on one of the upper floors, is a large area where his work is hung. He did a series of very textural paintings of ladies that look like they were made of boulders., as well as some more abstract paintings.
Here is the tomb of Salvador Dali. The only ordinary object in the whole Museum. It can be visited in a small dark room under the building. Isn't it weird that a man who lived such a colorful life rests in a quiet and 'standard' place like that...
