More about Hotel Historic
Loved the Hotel Historic
A beautiful hotel located in the historic district. It was as nice as described in other reviews on the TripAdvisor. It was even more difficult to find than described on TripAdvisor as there was construction in the city so there was a detour that got us totally lost. Very frustrating. But once we arrived at the hotel, everything was fine. We would return again.
Great value, great location
Stayed here for 2 nights in September in one of the apartments.
Fantastic location right in the heart of the old city. Girona is a beautiful place and surprisingly unspoilt by tourists. The Museum of Art, just a stone's throw away from the Hotel Historic, is well worth a visit - get the headset with their very professional audio tour (available in a number of languages).
Free parking available just around the corner with special voucher provided by hotel.
Accommodation very comfortable with everything you need.
Apartment was excellent value for money. Would go back and would definitely recommend.
Ref the bells! Yes they are close, but none of us had any problems sleeping - probably tired out from all the walking around the town!
Lovely place but oh the bells, the bells!
This a difficult review to write - after reading several reviews on TA we decided to risk booking the historic apartments, even though there were a few bell related horror stories - unfortunately, as we found out - they are all true!
The apartments themselves are really beautiful. They have been lovingly renovated and the facilities are superb. The staff are very efficient, friendly and willing to help. The location is superb - right in the centre of the old town and the parking is free (although driving to the historic is very difficult as you have to go through the winding restricted access streets of the old town - bit of a tip - park the car outside the old town and get a map from the tourist info and then ask the police officer who monitors all the traffic entering the old town for directions).
The problem, however, are the bells. My partner and I have travelled extensively around Spain and have never had it so bad! Every hour the cathedral bells go off followed just after they have finished by the church bells, and on occasion further chimes follow these. I am a light sleeper and got about 2 hours sleep over the 2 nights we were here, my partner is a very heavy sleeper and even she struggled - even after a heavy night out on the town to try and make nodding off easier! We left after 2 nights having booked for 3 and the staff did not seem in the least bit suprised when we gave our reasons for moving on early.
So all in all, Girona is fantastic, the Historic Apartments are efficiently run and very characterful.....but the bells will stop you sleeping, which I guess is the most important thing about a hotel?
Superb hotel, lovely location...
I booked Feb 06, after reading these reports and looking at web site and was really glad I did. The bells didn't bother any of our party of 5 at all, including my light sleeping elderly father. - one lady in a review i read commented that now she was home, she missed hearing the bells - which i totally agree with. I'd love to be back there, lying on the bed, gazing out the window open, listening to the Cathedral Bells - it was wonderfull.
The hotel was spotless, beautifully restored and lovingly cared for. Absolutely Gorgeously laid out. Lovely decor.
Staff and family were great. We stayed for 4 days/3 nights and vowed to go back a.s.a.p. We are now booking there for our Honeymoon.
Girona was lovely.
We met a woman who was staying in another hotel in the new town and couldn't sleep due to noise and bin men and pubs - she was jealous when we told her of our sleepy little cobbled streeted, quiet hotel in the old part.
Thanks Xavier and Family and Staff. You are right to be proud of your hotel. Looking forward to spending our Honeymoon there.
Absolutely Gorgeous Hotel
Fantastic hotel, Excellent Location and as long as you have ear plugs the bells were actually very pleasant as that was the only thing we were worried about but it worked out fine.. Would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone and would stay here again and Girona itself was absolutely gorgeous.
Beautiful City, Great Location
We stayed in a hotel room - a junior suite, very clean, modern, and spacious, together with a large circular bath. We also had a little terrace with an obstructed view of the Cathedral, and yes those bells are incessant, but after a days hiking up and down the myriad of steps in the old city and along the city walls, I'm sure they won't bother you at all and are a small price to pay for staying in a great location in a lovely old city. Girona has so much to offer. The Cathedral and it's exhibits are amazing and not to be missed, you cannot believe the riches and antiquity. The museum of art is also great and each museum you visit in Girona (of which there are several fascinating ones) all cater for British Tourists. Apart from the odd English person, though, we didn't see too many other tourists at the beginning of October which was so surprising given the picturesque surroundings. There are many superb restaurants, shops and bars, though be careful of the usual Spanish siesta time. The cheaper restaurants seemed to be on the other side of the river in the Placa Indepencia which is well worth a visit for lunch or evening meal, and don't miss all of the shops here either, they can be easily overlooked if you're staying in the historic centre. It's well worth staying here for at least a few days, if not a week as there are plenty of places to visit in the surrounding beautiful countryside.
We had tried to book the Historic for a three night visit but had left it too late so ended up at the Bellavista (5* in their dreams! / horrible!) On our third day we called in to look at the hotel, right in the middle of the old town, and were shown around several of the wonderful rooms by the owner. After a romantic lunch in a local restaurant recommended by the owner (at which my girlfriend acccepted my proposal of marriage!) we went back to the Historic and booked into their best suite. Lovely view across the rooftops, great double bath, huge bed, lovely lounge area with massive plasma screen. The owner kindly took us in his own car to the Bellavista and waited while we packed and checked out (no chance of a refund on the third night as paid in advance). We had a wonderful 24 hours and WILL be going back. Our only reservation is that as a boutique hotel there is no pool or sunbathing area, but if you are there for the romance of a beautiful city this IS THE PLACE TO STAY.
Girona - Great Weekend Break
We stayed in the Hotel Historic apartments , the first night in the town by the river - overlooking Placa Independencia, the second night was spent at the hotel iteslf. Both excellent value however the Hotel itself is preferable - less noise at night and it has double glazing.Bring ear plugs due to the proximity to the cathedral.
If you are a cycling fan the Hotel has had many Pro Cyclists stay there including the great Lance Armstrong ,there is a small shrine to American Cyclists in recepetion. The Hotel owner Xavier is very hepful.
"Food and Drink"
Ate at the excellent Lizarran , Placa Independencia, great for Tapas and drinks.(Photo below is my wife at Lizarran)
La Penyora was an experience , very busy on Sat night - booking advisable.Slow service towards the end of the meal , slightly chaotic.
L'Angelot is welcoming for breakfast and is excellent value.
Cafe L'Arc by the cathedral is superb , great music and the Cathedral view is awesome.
On the downside the River Cafe (if you find it) was poor, the worst coffees and serive we had all weekend.
Cafe Sol in the Theatre area is good value but unremarkable, see alos the security note below.
"The Tourist Trap"
I have have to say we felt safe all weekend up to the Sunday afternoon when my friends wifes handbag was stolen at Cafe Sol. The staff were remarkably unhelpful. However the police station is relatively near and there was an English speaker who could help with forms.
After that we became very aware of how few Tourist there were in town and how easy a target we were. Sundays are very quite in town. The other obvious fact is how the people in town change on a Sunday , it felt like a "Thiller" video shoot.
The lesson is be aware at all times and treat the place as if it were Barcelona. It is worth visiting but we were soured by the theft.
