Assume that this refers to the Golden Donaire Beach Hotel. We stayed here in September 2010 and were generally satisfied. We used hotel as a base for exploring the area and did not actually spend much time in the hotel itself - would have enjoyed it less if we'd have spent more time there.
Our first hotel room had a reasonably good view of the pool, La Pineda Promenade and the next door 5* plush palm gardens, but we were unfortunately also close to the kitchen refrigeration compressors which were LOUD and so we asked to be moved. Our new room had a terrible view (semi-derelict neighbour hotel and abandoned building site) but was quite and we slept well every night.
The buffet restaurant was very busy with a feel a bit like a school canteen, but the food was very good, with plenty of different choices and theme nights most evenings. The two bars were also reasonable value.
The hotel catered well for families and has an excellent kids club.
The hotel is right on the beach and in a great location if that is where you want to spend much of your time. Unfortunately, La Pineda hosts a large industrial port and petrochemical complex - this is the main view out of the front of the hotel which for us was very off-putting, a view only broken-up by the stream of container ships waiting to dock. This view is just the same for the more upmarket hotels in the area too, so if the view is not for you, try a different resort.
The hotel is very close to a La Plana bus stop and excursion pick-up point which was very useful.
This is a very busy hotel with many different nationalities staying here. The lifts can get busy at peak times. The evening entertainment was varied and attracted good crowds, though there is plenty else to do in La Pineda outside the hotel.
Unique Quality: This is a good base from which to explore the area, very close to the bus stop and excursion pick-up point. The same cannot be said for many other hotels in the area, especially in Salou. La Plana offices are very close to the hotel too – purchase excursions from there rather than the hotel or holiday reps and you will get much better information and a much lower price too. La Plana excursions will get you to Barcelona in reasonably good time and there are many different programmes to suit different tastes such as the Gaudi art and architecture tour, Las Ramblas shopping and football stadium tours. A very popular excursion was to watch an FC Barcelona league match at the Nou camp (I think the cost was around £70 including match ticket which I thought was reasonable by English standards – many people based their entire holiday around going to see the football!). Cambrils, Monserrat, Salou, Tarragona and Reus are all within easy reach and inexpensive to get to, most of which you can use a La Plana travel card for which is great value – all destinations were well worth a visit
Directions: Right on the beach, but also close to the industrail port and petrochemical complex
