Lloret del Mar - Hell by the Sea

Welcome to Lloret del Mar - one of the hell holes that has given the Costa Brava a well-earned reputation for low quality service, shabby accommodation, and grotty beaches. Now Catalonia's Minister for Consumption has laid it on the line - Lloret as a refuge for lager louts has to come to an end. When the regional government starts threatening a clamp-down you know that things must really be bad. The Costa Brava has long been on the slippery slope - more tourists every year with less and less money to spend. Lloret epitomises the worst of this mass tourism. The latest incident (August 2004) - involving 200-plus in massive street fights - is just the latest in a long string of nasty brawls (with the odd fatal stabbing thrown in for good measure). If you are looking for pitched battles between drunken hoodlums, Lloret is for you. If you want a pleasant beach holiday offering good value for money, go elsewhere (Turkey for instance). Not surprisingly, many British tour operators have struck Lloret from their catalogues this year - I strongly suggest you remove it from your list too.
