had a great time
we have just returned from the mar de menorca and we had a fantistic time! the apartments were basic but very clean although there is no air conditioning and being on the ground floor we could'nt leave our windows opened but you can hire a fan from reception for a very cheap price which helped. The pool was lovely although cold for a start also because we went out of season it was'nt too busy which suited us.The food was very nice with a good selection but towards the end of the week we felt a bit restricted with the meal times but that was our choice with going for all inclusive and we would definately go all inclusive again cause the up sides were great with travelling with two kids they want drinks all the time and snacks which could normally cost a fortune this we did'nt have to worry about. The staff and entertainment staff were great they worked really hard considering they had to translate everything in four different languages plus alot of the entertainment was german based as the hotel was 75% german guests but it was'nt a problem for us most of them could speak fairly good english so we socialised with them quite alot. The hotel all in all was very clean. The resort was out of the way but buses were easy to use and the hotel ran a bus to other beaches every day and provided a packed lunch you have to book to go on these trips the day before at reception. If you smoke then theres a bar just outside the complex which has a cigerette machine but you'll find thats the only place near the complex to get them or you could get a bus to mahon where there are tobacconists which is only a 15 minute bus ride away. It is worth a trip there as it is a lovely place and good for shopping. The harbour is beautiful and a boat trip is inexpensive and definately worth a go.We would definately come here again!!!
We stayed at the hotel Mar De Menorca from the 2nd-16th of August and it was superb: we are going back again this Summer, only this time with more people.
The rooms were basic but then again: who wants to stay in their hotel room all day? It's only there for sleeping! We paid for a family room and it had a lovely big balcony and we kept the windows open at night. A fault is there was no air conditioning, but the heat wasn't unbearable and fans were there to hire.
The food was great: I'm quite a fussy eater but the chefs were very friendly and they constantly brought out huge dishfuls of fresh new meals to serve. I cannot stress how good the quality of the food was: continental, however there was definitely something for all ages to enjoy.
The holiday reps were lively, enthusiastic, and got everyone involved and having a good time. They were always helpful and always around.
Day-trips were simple to book and affordable: we went on a sunset cruise and it was well worth the money. Plus, the hotel packs food to take with you to the beach, as it is all-inclusive after all.
Lastly, the one thing I didn't like about the resort was the sheer ignorance of some holiday makers there who purposely left their hotel rooms at 5am in the morning to put their towels on the sun loungers by the pool. By 7am, all the sun loungers will have gone and it's hugely frustrating as some of them don't actually use the sun loungers and go walking or on a day-trip.
All-in-all, the holiday was fantastic, the staff and reps were very polite and helpful and a brilliant time was had by all. It's a holiday I'd definitely recommend for anyone wanting to enjoy a family holiday. It IS a holiday for children though, so I wouldn't advise a couple without children going.
You get what you pay for
We have just returned from mar de menorca and after reading reviews of this hotel, we were very apprehensive. This hotel is family orientated and was a huge hit with our 10 year old son. The animation team include everyone in their daily activity programme, having designated programs for under 7's, 8-12 years, teenagers and adults which we felt was refreshing from the usual childrens clubs that only cater for tots.
The resort is isolated and a car is a definate must to see the rest of the island, (and to buy ciggies/go to pharmacies etc) but it is in a pretty village and the beach is not the hideous eyesaw as has been described- it is a pretty cove with clear water one side and a small harbour for a few fishing boats on the other. The walk down to the beach takes about 5 minutes but about 15 to come back up!
The apartments are basic but clean and also have a small kitchen area which is unusual for all inclusive. We had a one-bedroomed apartment which have a very large balcony with patio doors from the lounge and bedroom. There is no air conditioning- fans for hire are available (limited availability) from reception- 17 euros for 5 days ( we bought 2 large fans from mahon for 25 euros each (no problems at check in on return)
Food was not great- not as good a selection as previous all inclusives that we have stayed and you were not allowed to take anything out of the restaurant (which is indoor) and so if you wanted a cigarette with a coffee,as we did after breakfast, you had to wait for the bar to open at 10am. It was also a bit of a game having to pay a deposit of 1 euro every time you wanted a drink (so that you took your plastic cups back)
Hotel will exchange pounds for euros but only with cash- no credit cards and the rate is not good. Best going to mahon and using cash machine.
Bikes are free which my son put to good use, however to use any of the all inclusive facilities (bikes/tennis rackets etc) reception wanted our passport and my husband had a heated despute with the manager explaining that we were not going to bring our passorts to the pool everyday- he eventually relented and we could just leave our room key.
Nightly entertainment was the usual resident team shows mixed with professional shows which were avarage but we found that everything finished rather early- show finished at 10-10.30 and then quiet music played until 11pm. No having a dance here!
Overall not bad, car necessity but 14 days rather long. Fabulous for kids
If you go with thomson as we did- dont pay the prices of the excursions- they charged over 50 euros for ciutudella horses and the door price is 18 euros! (although they do include meal)
If you hire a car use either europcar or the hotel will arrange one for you- we used Valis and were told to bring the car back by 9am or we would be charged 15 euros for every hour that we were late, my husband arrived at 08.50 to an empty office- at 10.00 we called the central office and they said they would be there in 10 minutes- they finally came at 12.30 without an apology. We argued that we had missed breakfast and half of our day and wanted 15 euros for every hour that THEY were late. They would not give us any money back but said if we went to the main office in mahon that we could speak to the manager (of course we didnt as this would cost us 30 euros to go) The manager of the hotel said that many people have problems with this company so recommend you go elsewhere for car rental.
If you do hire a car, take your swimming togs as many beautiful coves etc- one resort ,saint cala galdana, very picturesque with lovely horshoe beach, jetty over small port and a cracking waterside cafe/restaurant that has a small pool and water slides for kids to play on while you eat and soak up the sun- 5 euros for 28 goes which lasts about 1 hour- a definate must if you have kids.
Loved the pool!
I stayed in the Mar De Menorca from 31st July untill the 7th August, I'm 13 and went with my mom and dad! When we 1st got there it was about half 9 pm, we checked in at reception and they were explaining stuf for hrs it was so boring! Because we missed tea they gave us a paked lunch each wich was very nice of them but.. well there was an apple an orange a lil cake some butter a tomatoe and a roll in there so i didnt eat anything out of it.. if you dont like any of that stuff take your own food with you! After struggling up steep twirling steps we finally got to our room, but we could'nt open our door! You have to turn the key to the right until it stops then pull the door backwards turn it abit more to the right then push it.. very confusing! Once we had got in our room we were quite supirsed at all the space we had cos after reading reviews on here we thought the rooms would be awful! The bed was very comftable and the sofa bed where i had to sleep was also abosultly fine to sleep on! There's plenty of quilts incase you get cold! Lots of wardrobe space and plenty of hangers! The balcony is lovely and very big.. we had an amazing sea view wich looked stunning when the sun was setting! Even though your very close to the airport just a 10minute drive.. you can only see the airoplanes.. can't hear them at all wich was a big relief! plus the airport closes at 12! The entertainment in the hotel all finishes at 11.. but you can still buy drinks till 12.. to get a drink you have to pay a 1 euro deposit on the glasses! so the best thing 2 do is get a glass for every1 at the begining of the week then whenever you want a drink just take the same glass to the bar && reffil it.. they'll change the glass so you wont get a funny taste! There are also self service soft drinks and beer wich is very handy & prevents ques! The food is sort of rubbish.. the same thing everyday & all i ate was chips & icecream wich made me ill by the end of the week! but if you ever feel like a change you can go down to cheepa's bar wich is an english bar underneath the hotel wich sells english pub food.. very nice! There are also 3 shops situated underneath the complex.. they have good soverniers & postcards.. newspapers from home.. good magazine && selection of books.. sweets crisps & other nibbles & cheep alchi incase you get bored of the bar stuff! The pool is absoulty awesome.. its clean.. shallow.. i can stand up in every place in there & im 5ft 6.. and its never busy! Theres plenty of sunbeds.. no need 2 reserve them with towels! & its all very well layed out so you dot have to be anywhere near any other family! Theres some stunnin' views to be seen from various places in the hotel! The enternainment was alright if you like the normal holiday stuff.. table tennis, tenis, games in the pool & stuff! & the evening entertainment consisted of the most annoying mini disco.. it was the same every night. drove me mad! An even more annoying reward ceromoney thing wiich i had 2 go back to my room for it was that boring! & then some shows the staff put on! The entertainers did try really hard to get everyone involved though! The beach near the hotel isnt that well beachy & is very abandoned i walked down there twice & never saw anyone on it so i recommend the bus service to other beaches! I would'nt go here for more than a week cos i got sort of bored! It's not very ideal for teenagers cos its so out of the way! I would probably come here again but i wont recommend it to anyone! But if you've already booked your holiday here dont worry its not like a total jail! Enjoy yourselfs! love yoo xxxx
Much better than expected after reading the reviews
My family and I have just returned from this hotel, where we had a relaxing enjoyable holiday. The accommodation is very spacious, with two (almost) teenage girls this was a necessity. The entertainment team worked really hard and if you let yourself go a bit and take part in the games in the pool, evening entertainment etc it makes it all the more enjoyable.
The plastic glassess, for which you pay a 1 euro deposit, were a good idea as it ensured that the pool area remained clean, tidy and was not overtaken by insects, the only problem was that there was a taste of salt with all drinks which we put down to the dishwasher that they were cleaned in!!
We used the beach bus twice, as we hired a car from Mahon for one week. The beaches varied in quality and activities, along with costs of sunbeds etc but all were worth visiting at least once. The car was invaluable as you are stuck in a slightly isolated place otherwise, we visited the many towns, beaches and places of interest whilst we had the car. The packed lunches were okay, still can't understand the tomoto every day though. Food in general as a bit of a let down, but I know I'm fussy, if all else failed I had pasta or even a chip butty.
We met some great people and the kids struck up some good friendships, being away from towns etc was good in this respect as it meant that it felt safe to let the kids wander the site (as long as I knew where they were going).
Overall we really enjoyed our stay, would probably go back, but may be for only 1 week. The staff were all friendly, helpful and approachable.
Just arrived back from a weeks stay this was to long. Dont book for two weeks you will go insaine. I will start with the rooms. The bathroom smelt like raw sewage and we only had 2 single beds and a sofa. May i add that the sofa is not even a sofa bed its just bits of foam. We approached the manager and he was not at all helpful and was quite rude. I had seen that other rooms had a put up bed. I asked for one he she ok . We NEVER got it. The plastic cups that you had to hire were always dirty and not washed very well. The hotel bar does not sell cigs and nether does the Spa shop. You have to take a trip into Mahon to stock up. The staff were not very friendly. The food was never labled correct once liver was maked up as beef! To top the lot my son became very ill on the last day and ended being very sick on the flight home. It lasted a week we ended up at the hospital! it was a bug he caught. I work in the travle industry and would NOT recommend this hotel.
Stayed at this immaculate resort for one week 17th-24th September, two adults and two children aged 10.
The apartment showed signs of wear, but this did not detract from or pleasure or put any of our party at risk. We stayed in Aries which is opposite the pool and adjacent to the main bar and restaurant area.
The room was serviced five times in a week. The restaurant was spotless a credit to the hard work of the polite and helpful staff. The food was fantastic even if it was more suited to European taste. The pool was stunning, cleaned daily. The bar and entertainment area were kept very clean, smoking was banned inside the bar and entertainment area which was great as who wants children passive smoking!
The children loved the day time entertainment and sports, the evening kiddies disco was great for 3-8yrs. The late evening entertainment was a mix of in-house and professional acts. The Brazilian Latino show was great! The in-house entertainment team tries to encourage participation from everybody and was very entertaining at times.
I have read some negative reviews for this resort and cannot believe that they are describing the same people or place! This was the best value for money holiday resort without compromise.
The hotel was located in lovely gardens with a fantastic pool, great for kids. We were staying all inclusive but found the food and drinks a bit boring after a few days, lucky there is another bar/restraunt located under the hotel, Chepas Bar. Here there was a great choice of good old british food and beers, they even had Guinness. Here you did have to pay as its not part of the complex but like they say you only get what you pay for. Chepas Bar is well worth a visit or two. Dont believe other reports saying the people are unfriendly, utter rubbish. I do see how some might say that as while I was in the bar I saw a guy try to watch the football on the tv without buying anything, he was asked to leave of course. Why go to a bar and not buy a drink, shameful. Anyway we loved the bar and the people. There was 2 car hire outlets, 2 gift shops and a supermarket in the complex, all you needed was here. Now dont expect Ibiza, its nothing like it, almost everything closes at midnight, except Chepas Bar. You are advised to get a car even if only for a few days, the island is lovely. The local beach is very pretty and clean. There is a restraunt above the beach, worth having a drink here just to take in the pretty view. The hotel was very clean and the rooms ok although they could have been bigger. We found the general staff at the hotel great although the hotel bar staff were in my opinion very off hand and unhelpful with the british guests including myself, not something they did with the Dutch and Germans. We would come back to Canutells no problem. Many thanks the general staff at the Hotel and the nice people at Chepas Bar.
Not the best of holidays ...........
Having read some of the reviews for this hotel I was really hoping for an enjoyable, relaxing (as relaxing as it can be with 2 very young children) holiday.
It turned into a very long 2 weeks.
We had a fairly early flight and got to the resort at 9am ish - our rooms were not available until midday and we were not allowed to start our 'all inclusive' until 11.30am - seriously not what i needed to know when we had been up since 2am and had to extremely tired and irritable children.
The rooms were very disappointing - very dark and needing updating - I would challenge anyone to prepare anything in the 'kitchen' area! Our room was a ground floor appartment - with patio doors, but we could not leave the door open to let in a breeze (no air con) as our little ones were out like a shot - so we had to swelter on some days.
The restaurant was always clean and tidy with very nice staff and plenty of high chairs - but the food was somewhat lacking - the childrens menu was basicaly chips with everything and we rarely saw a vegetable - though plenty of fresh fruit at lunch and evening meal.
There is a small spar shop on site which we ended up buying a few basics in despiration of trying to get our children to eat something - but their stock is very limited.
The pool was however lovely - there is a fairly large childrens pool at around 30-35cm deep and the main pool has two areas that shelve so you can wade in rather than be plunged into the deep end so to speak.
Oh and the drinking water in the bar and restaurant - is disgusting - I dont know whether they try and purify if themselves, but it is like drinking alka selza all the time - very salty and this makes all the soft drinks such as lemonade and coke taste revolting.
So all in all we had an OK time - nothing special - couple of rainy days could have been a disaster if we had not taken along our dvd player and loads of films - glad others have had a better time - but clearly we must have been missing something!
started well,room for improvment
Our first all inclusive experience. Initially we were very impessed and having read many reviews we had a good idea what to expect (we are a family of five but the apartment was tiny and when we opened the cot bed up we couldn't move around). The biggest plus factor was the entertainments staff who kept the children on the go constantly, our kids loved the games during the day and the disco at night. The pool was cold but great. However this was not the 'all inclusive' i expected. It seemed to me that the hotel deliberately limited your access to snacks between meal times and conveniently had overpriced vending machines beside the pool to encourage kids to spend. Snacks were suposed to be available but the restuarant was locked sometimes between meals. You were also not allowed to take food out of the restuaraunt. We found the selection of food reasonable but be warned Thompson told us kids menu available, but there was nothing but chips and ice cream for the children(they didn't initially complain of course but got bored with this and we had to dine away from the resort occasionally to keep them eating). Our kids loved the bouncy castle but again we had to pay for it? We enjoyed the overall experience but felt let down by the travel agent who obviously can't know what a hotel is like if they don't have reps on site. We only seen the rep the day before we left and only because some complaints had been made regarding the food.
