More about Best San Diego
Just come back today from staying at San Diego with other family members (who are still there for another week).
Nice Hotel for the price. Quiet not a lot to do there for kids and not a great deal of daytime activities but probably better in high season. Evening entertainment not bad. Had a couple of nighs where you joined in with games which was great fun. Hotel and Pool Area in fact overall clean and tidy. Staff all friendly . I agree the food was repetative although it was edible, with chips for breakfast as well but kept the 18 month old happy in our party. Chef there cooked pancakes in the morning and burgers/hot dogs in the evening. Excellent happy hour in teh bar between 8.30 and 10.00pm. Half a lager from the pump was 1.35 euros so you get a pint for that price during happy hour. Sangria was lovely there as well. Overall an enjoyable holiday. Weather was fantastic. Did not want to come home. We never go to the same hotel twice but if did an allocated on arrival and got his hotel would not be disappointed.
Good 3 star Hotel in a great location
Stayed at San Diego for 4 nights April 07. Had a problem with our patio door on arrival, reported it to reception & it was fixed straight away.
Reception staff could have smiled a little bit more but otherwise they were fine.
Rooms were very nice considering only 3 star & kept clean with towels changed daily.
Pool area quite small but because it was April & because the Hotel was full of Spanish pensioners it wasn't a problem.
Talking of Spanish pensioners! They were quite rude, they just barged in front of you & never smiled or tried to engage in conversation. Apparently they're subsidised at this time of year by the Spanish government to go on holiday, so most hotels were full of them although it wasn't too much of a problem.
The food was perfectly adequate if slightly repetitive but definitley something for everyone unless extremeley fussy.
The Hotel is situated in a quiet area with only a 5 minute walk to a small beach & approx. 10-15mins walk to the main beach, either along seafront or down through some shops. Don't listen to the reviews that say it's a fifteen minute walk uphill! It's not bad at all, unless you're not used/don't like walking.
Salou itself is very nice with something for everyone.
Booked through Globespan with flights going to Barcelona with a 1hour 15min transfer time.
Would go back as represented good value for money.
Basic Clean Accomm - Pool Area Could Be Better
This hotel is in a good location. The rooms themselves are very clean
& towels are changed every day. Food ok - good choice of salads and then for main course choices of pasta, meat and fish with chips potatoes and veg.. even had dressed salmon one night with mussels. some nights choices of cold meats too. ice cream and fancy cake for pudding. Breakfast gives you bucks fizz! Omelette, Chips! Bacon, Tomatoes etc.. even fresh cooked crepes.
Drinks are not included in dinner but you can have a bottle of wine for a reasonable 7 euros and they will keep any unused for you for the next night. My only gripe is that the pool area was very basic and there was no parasols for those with fair skin or just wanted to sit by the pool in the shade. The staff were very friendly and helpful. For those with younger children it may be useful to know that there is a chemist just around the corner and a medical centre.
Just passed this and down a steep incline is a small sandy cove which
is busy but nice. About a 5 min walk down!! and a 10 min walk up!! the main beach is a little further but very clean and has an array of beach bars where you can sit and watch the world go by. Entertainment for all ages nearby, You can pick up a parasol for 10 euros but its not very good for the pool as no where to place it properly but very handy for the beach - beach beds around 4 euros each - extra to be in the shade! Best to fly to Reus airport - transfer time only about 15/20 mins compared to Barcelona which took us an hour and a half...
worse food ever!
We have just returned from a week at the San Diego (Best Hotel?) This is no best hotel. I had read some bad reviews before i went and was a bit concerened but not too worried as i just thought you cant please everyone. I was right to be worried. Below are some reasons why.
Rooms - very small and the walls are paper thin. You can hear the people next door word for word which results in not getting much sleep especially when they have screaming kids!
Food - disgusting, always freezing, no choice for vegetarians. We only ate twice in the restaurant. There is no order in the restaurant, if you leave your table for 1 second someone will take it. All the old Spanish people throw you out the way to get to the food.
Pool - very small for size of hotel.
Entertainment - ok if your Spanish!
Maid service - is the only half decent thing going for this hotel. Towels changed and beds made everyday.
Location - is very good in a quiet part just 5 minutes from main strip.
Overall - I enjoyed my holiday in Salou especially going to Portaventura and Barcelona for the day. The beach is very nice and shops and night life are good. Would i return to the San Diego hotel not even if i was stranded and it was my last option! Would i return to Salou, yes.
Book this Hotel if you want to lose weight, you will !!!
Stayed for the first week in June, hotel was nice enough, food was absolutely awful, being a vegetarian there's never much for me on holiday anyway but my boyfriend who eats ANYTHING & EVERYTHING even struggled, first night we went for supper the soup was supposed to be cream of vegetable (it tasted of fish), every night after that was cream of vegetable (but a different colour)??? You can purchase wine in the restaurant to have with your meal, if you don't finish it they put it in the fridge for you to have the next night, DON'T DO THIS, the people that work in the restaurant don't speak a word of English so trying to get your wine again is an absolute nightmare, they also charge 7 euro's for a bottle, you can buy it for 1 euro 75 in the shop round the corner !! Went to Port Aventura Theme Park, ok, it gets called the Spanish version of Universal Studio's Florida, nothing like it, we went to Salou because of the Park but don't think it was worth it, didn't enjoy Salou at all and wouldn't go back, no night life at all (we're in our 20's), not a very clean place either, i had read that Salou had one of the best nightlife in Spain, total rubbish, don't recommend the place at all. 1 of the Best
People have really got the holiday blues who have wrote the reviews before myself.
Please don’t be put off by what people have said.
Stayed here for a week with a friend. Both in our 20’s.
Was half board – breakfast and evening meal. For breakfast you could have basically everything and anything. Cooked breakfast in a help yourself buffet style – chips, beans, sausage, bacon, egg, hash brown, toast there was also cereals available – again every cereal you could think off.
Evening meals were great too again so much variety, eg chips, hot dogs, burgers, curry, fish and meat, pasta and rice. You pick what you want and can have as much of as you want. Pudding was a treat massive selection of fresh fruit – peaches, melon. There was also cake, ice-cream, jelly. All sorts too much to write!
The hotel itself was clean maids came round every day. The location was good. Beach about a 10 min walk (it is on a slope I wouldn’t recommend it for older people and the roads/pavements are slippy so be careful) and shops about 5 mins. The evening entertainment seemed ok we were adults but we quite enjoyed it and the kids seemed as they was having a fun time. The pool was quite small and only downside was there wasn’t many sun beds and we went 1st week in July so must be hectic when kids are off from school. The reception staff are a bit rude and there was 1 girl that didn’t know a English and just said ‘What’ all the time which was really rude. We was on 1st floor so was quite lucky as there are only 2 lifts and sometimes your waiting a while for them but if your fit just do the stairs. We didn’t have a pool view but was happy with the room we had – it was big enough and a both had doudle bed each! Showers were good I’ve stayed at a few hotels and not even had a decent shower.
We visited Barcelona and went to Sunday and Monday market. The Sunday 1 is supposed to be the best in Slaou but it wasn’t that good loads of fruit but not much else. Although a good selection of bikinis, bags bits like that. They had loads of livestock in really small cages, which was quite sad, and then as they were sold they were chucked in the smallest of boxes to be sold as food. We did Barcelona through First Choice excursion so we didn’t have long there but was worth it for the shopping. Went to Portaventura that was good definitely worth a trip. We went in the evening as it was slightly cheaper was 7pm till midnight. Loads of rides and fireworks at the end. There wasn’t much nightlife in Salou which was s bit disappointing as we were told in the travel agent there was. I think there were a few but it wasn’t that close to this hotel. Weather was nice and hot but was getting quite windy as we left.
Not sure if I would go back to Salou but I would be happy to stay here again. I’m sure there is worse. And for what we paid we had a bargain!
Brilliant Hotel, Great Value for money
Our families stayed at the San Diego Hotel in June 2007, we were very impressed with the standards. The hotel is amazing value for money.
The bedrooms are clean, comfortable and have maid service every day.
The staff are very helpful and courteous.
The food is excellent, there is something for everybody, it is a buffet restaurant with so much choice, they also have a chef cooking fresh meat and fish to order on a griddle in the restaurant each evening.
The bar has a happy hour each evening between 8pm and 10pm which is great value, all drinks are two for the price of one.
The pool area is nice and not too crowded with plenty of sunbeds, could do with a few parasols but there are shaded areas.
The evening entertainment could be better for older children, but the guy caters for young children and really does a good job, for teenagers and older children there are several pool tables and arcade games.
The hotel is within walking distance to the beach and into the centre of Salou, where there are many more bars, restaurants and nightclubs.
Its also a great location for those visiting Portaventura theme park which is only a short bus ride away.
On the whole, a great family hotel in a great location which is excellent value for money, we will definitley book this hotel again.
Julie Gregory and family.
love salou but not san diego
We have just returned from hotel san diego, had a great holiday when we went out the hotel, the rooms were small and almost clean, the food was not up to much either we found it difficult to make a meal and went out to eat most days. The pool area was dirty and so was the pool. The only thing that was good was the kids entertainer Joey but even that was the same songs every night. We will return to Salou but not San Diego.
Best Hotel... yeah right!
Our holiday must have been doomed from the start - once we eventually arrived at the hotel after being dropped off by Thomson 3 streets away. We were told by guests that the food was bad and that during their stay there they had witnessed lots of accidents. The food... interesting! chips for breakfast! the evening meal was very repeatative, but amazingly on the two intake days the food was very good. The staff were grumpy apart from the "animation" man Joey who was excellent, but he left on our last night. Various accidents happened whilst we were there and the staff just seemed to pass the buck and claim it was not their fault. Yet on our last night/day - when the floor was wet they seemed to have found a yellow warning sign to place out!!!! the prices of drinks at the bar changed depending on who served you.
Don't think we will recommend the hotel ... part of the Best Hotels group.....best... not the correct word really... !
Our family arrived at the hotel, 2 adults 2 boys, in the first week of the main childrens holidays (Tues 31/07/07) so expected it to be busy, it was more so towards the end of our week. Rooms okay a bit squashed 4 to a room, but maid service and towel change everday, in fact the whole hotel was emaculate and clean. Food buffett style, choice and quality okay and plentyful, however very busy in restaurant at main times.
Pool sunbeds were in short supply and therefore people were queing to rush down in the morning before 9am to put towels on the beds. We found it more pleasurable and less stressful to go to the small beach, a little cove just at the top of the street.
However, most of the time we were out and about a week is not long enough to do all the attractions/activites that Salou has to offer. Good value for money and would stay in Best hotels again.
Hotel San Diego - Salou
WE are going to this hotel in June and would like to know from anyone who has stayed there, about the hotel, food etc etc.
RE: Hotel San Diego - Salou
Went there about 13 years ago on my first holiday without my parents. Had an absolute ball, food was good, hotel was comfortable then, and I'm led to believe that vast improvements have been made since 1992!
Good luck and enjoy!
